Prevention
- Advise coaches of flexibility, strengthening, and conditioning programs to help prevent injuries and optimize performance.
- Aid coaches and athletes in the fitting and maintenance of protective equipment.
- Apply preventative taping techniques, special pads, and braces; fabricate specialty pads and braces.
- Maintain and control of possible environmental hazardous situations.
- Identify and correct common risk factors and conditions predisposing athletes to increased risk of injury.
Recognition, Evaluation, and Immediate Care
- Conduct thorough initial evaluations of injuries sustained by the athlete.
- Obtain a history of the athlete.
- Observe and inspect the involved area.
- Perform special testing procedures to include tests of strength, range of motion, stability, and function.
- Determine appropriate management of the injury with physician involvement.
- In case of serious injury including suspected fracture, head or spinal injury, activate EMS if necessary, refer to physician for additional evaluation/treatment.
Rehabilitation and Reconditioning
- Evaluate athlete using standard procedures of evaluation and reassessment.
- Create and implement comprehensive rehabilitation/treatment programs.
- Determine rehabilitation and sport goals and objectives, administer indicated therapeutic modalities and exercises.
- Evaluate/re-evaluate rehabilitation progress/status and develop criteria for the athlete's return to competition under the direction of a referring physician.
- Serve as a resource for parents, staff, coaches, and athletes regarding the rehabilitation process.
Health Care Administration
- Complete and maintain appropriate documentation related to athletes' medical history, injuries, treatment, rehabilitation, and physician referrals.
- Coordinate a prescribed protocol which includes emergency management and referral systems specific to the setting by involving appropriate health care professionals.
- Communicate athlete's progress to the physician and other staff members in a timely manner to provide total care.
- Establish a working relationship with a designated team physician and community physicians.
Professional Development and Responsibility
- Enhance knowledge of sports medicine issues by participating in staff meetings, educational and clinical activities.
- Adhere to ethical and legal statutes, rules, and guidelines defining the proper role of a certified athletic trainer.
- Maintain a high standard of professional accountability with respect to attitude, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness.
- Hold and maintain the NATABOC certification, Nevada State Licensure, and appropriate CPR certification.
- Serve as a resource to enhance awareness of the roles and responsibilities of the certified athletic trainer.
- Complete Blood Borne Pathogens Exposure control plan training and comply with regulations.
