NAGPRA/CalNAGPRA Repatriation Coordinator
About the role
California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA) is seeking a NAGPRA/CalNAGPRA Repatriation Coordinator to assist with facilitating the University's compliance with federal and state NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA legislation, including the California Assembly Bills: AB 275 and AB389.
Responsibilities
- Facilitate the University's compliance with federal and state NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA legislation.
- Work with the President's Designee to assist with the University's good faith efforts to repatriate ancestral human remains and cultural items in a respectful and timely manner.
- Interpret archival data (e.g., archaeological field notes) to determine presence of burials and cultural items as defined under NAGPRA.
- Establish and maintain professional and cooperative working relationships with administrators, faculty, and staff.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with a diverse group of individuals to secure and/or provide information to clarify situations and resolve problems.
- Engage in genuine tribal consultation and recognition of Tribal sovereignty.
- Work with archaeological collections and associated archival records.
- Develop and sustain collegial working relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
- Work effectively with Native American communities, preferably with California Native American Tribes and tribal communities.
Requirements
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Anthropology, Museum Studies, Native American Studies, Historic Preservation, or other related field.
- Administrative experience; establishing goals and workload priorities and following tasks through to successful completion.
- Knowledge of procedures for compliance with the Federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA- 25 U.S. C. 3001-13) and its accompanying regulations (43 C.F.R.I0.1-.17).
- Highly skilled communication and interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse group of individuals.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite Programs, including Teams, Excel, and/or other database programs and data management systems (e.g., Access).
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Demonstrated interest and/or ability to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment.
- A valid CA Driver License or eligibility to obtain one within a reasonable time upon hire.
Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Anthropology, Museum Studies, Native American Studies, Historic Preservation, or other related field.
- Master's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Cultural Resources Management, Anthropology, Archaeology, Native American Studies, or History of Native American people.
- Experience with collection management best practices and standards.
- Familiarity with current literature relating to anthropology, archaeology, Native American cultures of North America and the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and pertinent State laws.
- Knowledge of CSU processes, protocols, and procedures.
- Ability to communicate and adhere to tribal requests regarding the care and storage of ancestral human remains and cultural items.

Pay
Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Salary range is $4,135 - $12,288/monthly. Budgeted hiring salary range is $7,000 - $9,833/monthly.

The Administrator I appointment will be made under the guidelines for management and supervisory employees of the California State University. All rights and benefits associated with this appointment are governed by the Management Personnel Plan.
