MWR Materials Handler

About the role

This position is part of the Morale, Welfare & Recreation Division (MWR) of Navy Region Southwest (NRSW) and is located at Naval Base Coronado. The purpose of the role is to maintain storage layouts, space utilization, stock arrangement, and traffic flow in accordance with regulations. The incumbent receives, stores, ships, and inventories materials and equipment, coordinates inbound and outbound shipments, operates forklifts and other vehicles, guides staff, and performs physically demanding work in indoor and outdoor warehouse environments.

Responsibilities

• Handle or oversee a segment of a large warehouse, or serve as the senior employee in a smaller warehouse.
• Assist the supervisor in developing plans for storage and arrangement of stock in accordance with agency regulations, determining configuration, setup, movement, rearrangement, and traffic flow.
• In a large warehouse, be responsible for storage and space utilization for a specific commodity or equipment group.
• In a smaller warehouse, act as the senior non‑supervisory worker, laying out storage space, establishing item locations, determining organization and arrangement of stock, and identifying high‑ and low‑usage items according to agency regulations and procedures.
• Operate vehicles such as stake trucks, cherry‑pickers, forklifts, etc.
• Coordinate incoming and outgoing shipments and placement of materials with the docking area, and schedule personnel to facilitate movement of material in accordance with priorities, scheduling requirements, and space allocations.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Must successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check; any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
• Must meet federal suitability requirements, including successful completion of a background investigation.
• A valid driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

• In‑depth knowledge of the overall warehousing plan, documentation requirements, and accepted warehousing methods, procedures, and techniques.
• Ability to lay out storage space and establish item and material locations in accordance with agency regulations.
• Ability to prepare inventory and production reports, screen and identify shipping and receiving documents for discrepancies, and direct shipments to shipping or storage areas.

Skills

• Skill in the use of vehicles and forklifts (driver’s license required).
• Ability to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods.
• Capability to bend, stoop, and work in tiring or uncomfortable positions.
• Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds; heavier items are moved with handling equipment or assistance.
• Work may be performed indoors or outdoors in environments that are hot, damp, cold, drafty, or poorly lit.
• May be required to wear protective clothing.
