Music Ed Assistant / Accompanist

About the role

This position assists the teacher in a music classroom and accompanies school choirs during rehearsals and concerts. Under the direction of the vocal music teacher, the accompanist supports section rehearsals, coaches individuals and small ensembles, and provides assistance to substitute teachers as needed.

Qualifications

• Advanced piano skills
• Advanced music theory
• Vocal technique preferred
• Sight reading, conducting, transposing, arranging and coaching skills

Responsibilities

• Play the piano for class and performances
• Accompany school choirs during rehearsals, concerts, and assist the director in leading section rehearsals and concerts
• Coach individuals, small ensembles, and instrumentalists within the school system
• Perform piano accompaniment for practice rehearsals and performances for middle school choirs, including concerts, District/State Choral Festival, Jazz Festival, Solo & Ensembles, and other available student opportunities
• Lead section rehearsals by playing parts, identifying student areas for growth, vocal modeling for proper technique, correcting mistakes, and providing correct notes and rhythms
• Coach solos and ensembles by arranging or transposing music, teaching note and rhythm, recognizing and resolving intonation problems, teaching healthy vocal techniques, providing suggestions regarding interpretation of music, and encouraging students
• Provide assistance to substitute teachers by leading rehearsals as necessary

• Hearing: Perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, receiving detailed information through oral communication, and making fine discriminations in sound
• Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
• The worker is subject to environmental conditions
• Consistent and reliable in-person attendance is required
