About the role

This position is located at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum (CHSDM). The Museum Specialist provides support on a full range of curatorial responsibilities that include exhibition, programmatic, research and administrative duties.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts original library and web-based research in English and Spanish related to exhibition theme and designers.
  • Conducts original library and web-based research in English and Spanish on the history, date, medium, provenance, historical significance, and related works.
  • Works with Associate Curator of Latino Design on all aspects of research, planning, execution, and installation of exhibitions, including attending exhibition production meetings, liaising with curator(s), creating object checklists, supplying/editing didactic information, such as objects labels and exhibition texts.
  • Under the guidance of the Associate Curator of Latino Design conducts scholarly research based on the permanent collection and potential acquisitions.
  • Captures and maintains collection/exhibition records using TMS software in collaboration with Registrar and updates department files as required.
  • Maintain a Bank Account for Direct Deposit/Electronic Transfer

Requirements

This position is open to all U.S. Citizens or U.S. Nationals. Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with Selective Service.

Qualifications

  • Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as exhibition experience with a collection of US Latinx and Latin American design, to assist with performing collections management, research, exhibition planning, public engagement, and associated administrative duties.
  • Education: 2 full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree related to the position
