About the role

The Tennessee State Museum seeks a Museum Program Assistant to engage the public by leading historical tours and delivering educational programs at the Museum, the Tennessee State Capitol, and at off-site events. This role requires effective communication, strong public presentation skills, and a solid foundation in Tennessee history.

Responsibilities

  • Present historically accurate interpretive tours and educational programs for Museum exhibits and the Tennessee State Capitol.
  • Research and learn Tennessee historical and geographical information to support high quality program delivery.
  • Assess the age and knowledge level of tour groups to provide accessible, age appropriate content, including accommodations for special needs groups.
  • Deliver statewide educational outreach such as teacher professional development, festivals, and conferences.
  • Research, write, and develop curriculum content for educational programs delivered both virtually and on-site.
  • Provide supervision and customer service in the Museum's children's gallery.
  • Assist with maintaining and updating educational materials such as lesson plans and traveling trunks; recommend improvements to existing programs.
  • Collect and report visitor data related to programs, tours, traveling trunks, and gallery visitation.
  • Support the Museum Program Coordinator with scheduling groups and necessary program resources.
  • Require weekend and holiday work to support museum operations and public-facing services.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree.
  • Qualifying experience in educational system or professional museum work may be substituted for the required education, on a year for year basis, to a maximum of four years.
  • Complete a background clearance application which includes releasing all records involving any criminal history.
  • A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.

  • A valid driver's license
  • For the past five years, the candidate's driver record must not have record of the following violations: driving under the influence (DUI), reckless driving, license suspension for moving violations, more than 4 moving violations.
