Museum Educator

General Responsibilities

Museum Educators are welcoming, public-facing facilitators who help children, families, school groups, and general visitors discover and engage with art. Through conversation, play, movement, tactile learning, and hands-on artmaking, Museum Educators create active and accessible experiences that invite visitors to make meaningful connections with works of art.

Weekly assignments may include facilitating interdisciplinary PreK–12 school tours, leading family-friendly gallery games and object-handling experiences, welcoming visitors to interactive spaces throughout the Museum, or facilitating Creation Station, the Museum’s weekend drop-in artmaking program inspired by works on view.

The Museum engages approximately 5,000 schoolchildren each year. Its school programs use works of art as starting points for connections across subject areas. Museum Educators adapt their approach for students with a wide range of backgrounds, learning styles, and prior experiences with art museums.

The ideal candidate is friendly, outgoing, adaptable, and strongly customer-service-oriented. Candidates should enjoy working with children and families, feel comfortable initiating conversations with visitors, and be enthusiastic about helping people experience the Museum as a welcoming space for discovery.

Training on the Museum’s collection, exhibitions, educational approach, facilitation techniques, and program curricula will be provided.

Funding for Museum Educators for the 2026–2027 season is made possible by the Estate of Jay and Jane Braus.

School Tour Facilitation

Facilitate interdisciplinary, inquiry-driven gallery tours for PreK–12 students using active-learning and object-based teaching strategies.

Adapt tour content, pacing, vocabulary, and activities to meet the developmental needs and learning objectives of different grade levels.

Facilitate or assist with tour-related studio activities.

Work collaboratively with classroom teachers, chaperones, fellow Museum Educators, docents, teaching artists, and Museum staff.

Family and Public Gallery Engagement

Welcome and engage children, families, and general visitors throughout the Museum with warmth, enthusiasm, and attentiveness.

Facilitate family-friendly gallery activations, including tactile object-handling experiences, looking activities, creative prompts, and gallery games.

Initiate informal conversations that help visitors connect with works of art and feel comfortable participating.

Facilitate Creation Station, the Museum’s weekend drop-in program featuring hands-on art activities inspired by works on view.

Explain artmaking activities clearly and provide age-appropriate assistance to children and their caregivers.

Oversee designated interactive areas throughout the Museum, ensuring that materials are organized, replenished, accessible, and used appropriately.

Monitor interactive spaces and help maintain a safe, welcoming, and orderly environment.

Adapt activities and interactions to respond to visitors of different ages, abilities, interests, and levels of familiarity with art.

Qualifications

• High school diploma; additional education or coursework is a plus.
• At least one year of customer service, hospitality, education, camp, childcare, or related experience.
• Experience working directly with children or adolescents.
• Strong verbal communication and group-facilitation skills.
• Able to communicate complex ideas in an engaging, age-appropriate, and accessible manner.
• Enthusiasm for learning about art and making connections between art and other disciplines.
• Dependable, punctual, flexible, and comfortable working in a collaborative environment.
• Able to respond calmly and thoughtfully to the changing needs of students, teachers, and school groups.
• Regular availability on at least two days between Wednesday and Friday, generally from 9:30 am–1:00 pm.
• Availability to attend the full training program August 24–28, 2026, 9:30 am–12:00 pm.
• Successful completion of required background screening.

Preferred

• Degree or coursework in education, museum education, art education, art history, studio art, humanities, or a related field.
• Experience facilitating inquiry-based, object-based, or interdisciplinary learning.
• Experience working with PreK–12 students in a museum, school, camp, after-school program, or other informal learning environment.
• Experience working with students from Title I schools.
• Bilingual Spanish/English communication skills.
