Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of the Maryland State Police Trooper position is to enforce the criminal and motor vehicle laws of the State of Maryland, issue traffic citations and warnings, investigate traffic accidents, and complete criminal investigations.

Position Duties

  • Enforce criminal and motor vehicle laws of the State of Maryland
  • Issue traffic citations and warnings
  • Investigate traffic accidents
  • Investigate and complete criminal investigations
  • Interview witnesses, victims, and suspects
  • Write field reports
  • Ars arrest and process suspects
  • Prepare cases for court and testify in court
  • Provide basic medical attention to ill and injured persons

  • Request a reassignment to a specialized unit after graduation of the MSP academy
  • Specialized units include Accident Reconstruction, Automotive Safety Enforcement Division, Aviation Command, Canine Unit, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, Computer Crimes, Crime Lab, Criminal Investigations, Dive Team, Drug Enforcement, Executive Protection, Homeland Security, Licensing Division, and S.T.A.T.E. Team (SWAT)

Minimum Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must:

  • Be willing to work in any Maryland county
  • Have the ability to enforce criminal and motor vehicle laws of the State of Maryland
  • Issue traffic citations and warnings
  • Investigate traffic accidents
  • Investigate and complete criminal investigations
  • Interview witnesses, victims, and suspects
  • Write field reports
  • Ars arrest and process suspects
  • Prepare cases for court and testify in court
  • Provide basic medical attention to ill and injured persons

Selection Process

  • Completion of the initial section of the online application up to the indicated stop point
  • Attendance of an Applicant Orientation
  • Functional Fitness Assessment Test
  • POST written examination

  • Background Investigation
  • Medical Testing
  • Police Selection Committee
