About the role

The Special Education Physical Education (P.E.) Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering standards-based physical education instruction that promotes students' physical fitness, motor skill development, healthy lifestyles, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The teacher creates a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment that encourages lifelong wellness while adapting instruction to meet the diverse learning, communication, and physical needs of all students.

This position requires flexibility and a willingness to teach additional subject areas, such as robotics or other assigned courses, based on student and program needs. Positions at MN State Academy for the Deaf require American Sign Language (ASL) skills. Candidates will be assessed for signing skills prior to hire.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver standards-based physical education instruction that promotes students' physical fitness, motor skill development, healthy lifestyles, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Create a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment that encourages lifelong wellness while adapting instruction to meet the diverse learning, communication, and physical needs of all students.
  • Collaborate with staff, families, and related service providers to support student success.
  • Participate in school activities, meetings, and professional development as a member of the educational team.
  • Teach additional subject areas, such as robotics or other assigned courses, based on student and program needs.

Requirements

  • Must possess a valid Deaf/hard of hearing (DHH) Minnesota Teacher license or have the ability to obtain one prior to the start date.
  • Knowledge of Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) or similar ASL rating system.
  • Knowledge of the deaf/hard of hearing and deaf/blind students and educational practices.
  • Ability to read and write English sufficient to understand written policies and procedures and education plans and to maintain records and documentation.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of curriculum, language acquisition and educational best practices as it relates to deaf/hard of hearing students and/or deaf/blind students.
  • Experience working with deaf/hard of hearing students.
  • Demonstration of advanced sign skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (with assistance).
  • Be able to sit, stand and walk throughout the workday.
