As an MRI Technician (PRN), you will perform a variety of technical procedures, manipulating radio frequency signals within a magnetic field to demonstrate cross-sectional anatomy and detect pathology. This role requires independent judgment, initiative, and ingenuity in performing technical procedures within a supportive and patient-focused environment.

Responsibilities

  • Verifies requisition, orders, patient history, consents, and ensures the correct exam is ordered; consults with Radiologist if needed.
  • Demonstrates good working knowledge of RIS and PACS; orders, starts, and completes exams.
  • Charges supplies and documents medication; sends images to PACS and reviews them.
  • Scans all necessary paperwork and assembles exam images, requisitions, and previous images in PACS before submission to Radiologist for interpretation.
  • Adapts techniques to various imaging situations to produce diagnostic-quality images; requests assistance when needed.
  • Positions patients correctly with minimal repeats, including in challenging situations.
  • Uses correct lifting techniques and obtains assistance to prevent injuries when moving patients.
  • Takes precautions to prevent patient falls or injury; ensures unstable patients are not left alone.
  • Transports patients safely, checking for tubes, catheters, wires, restraints, IVs, and other medical devices.
  • Returns patients to rooms ensuring bed rails are up, restraints in place, IV pumps plugged in, catheter bags hung, and call button within reach.
  • Utilizes MRI coils properly and selects the appropriate coil for each patient exam; explains the purpose of the coil to the patient.
  • Observes contrast injections and injector to prevent infiltrations and recognize reactions; follows contrast dosage guidelines exactly.
  • Understands and adheres to the hospital patient restraint policy, ensuring patient safety and image quality.
  • Verifies patient identity (DOB, name, and exam) and ensures patients are not left alone during procedures.
  • Respects and protects patient privacy and dignity during undressing, dressing, and procedures.
  • Warms up equipment before use and moves portable equipment with caution to minimize damage.
  • Explains MRI procedures to patients to gain cooperation and reduce fear or claustrophobia; keeps patients informed during the procedure.
  • Remains at the control station during scans, keeping the patient under constant observation.
  • Wears appropriate protective equipment (gloves, mask, eye shield, gowns) as needed.
  • Disposes of sharps, body fluids, contaminated supplies, and linens according to policies and procedures.
  • Cleans equipment after each patient and ensures the MRI magnet door is locked when not in use.

Requirements

  • Good knowledge of all aspects of MRI procedures and protocols, patient care skills, and communication.
  • Graduate of a 2-year accredited school of Radiology.

Qualifications

  • ARRT certification in MRI (R).
  • MRT licensure with the State of Texas.
  • AHA BLS certification.
