About the Role
Performs a variety of MRI procedures utilizing a high-energy magnetic field for diagnosis of disease processes and delineation of both normal/abnormal anatomy as well as pathological conditions in areas of the human body.
Reports to: Director—Radiology / Department Manager
Responsibilities
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge and skill levels in:
- Area of expertise to ensure production of high quality images
- Safe operation of equipment and accessories with proper warm-up exposure, daily QC, and good reporting techniques
- Quality Control guidelines, State and Federal regulations, and department policies/procedures
- Utilization of the Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS)
- Completion of Safety Reports
- Basic scheduling in Community Wide Scheduling (CWS)
- Demonstrates Radiation and MRI Safety and Protection techniques to minimize hazards, including: ALARA, Dosimetry, Shielding, Collimation, Magnetic field.
- Performs correct exam on correct patient using two patient identifiers: name and date of birth, and verifies the Meditech order with the physician’s order.
- Follows the PACS and Meditech workflow, reviewing, approving, and entering information in a timely and accurate manner after each patient.
- Consults with the radiologist on duty to assure correct scanning parameters when necessary, especially for trauma or difficult/infrequent studies.
- Acts as MRI Safety Officer:
- Demonstrates safety in all MRI zones
- Monitors personnel and equipment entering MRI Zones III and IV
- Conducts proper screening of patients for ferromagnetic objects (e.g., pacemakers, watches, bankcards)
- Reports to MRI Safety Committee appropriately
- Trains and educates staff regarding MRI safety
- Ensures compliance of MRI Safety Policy
- Reviews and updates MRI policies to comply with all regulations
- Conducts safety audits accurately and as instructed.
- Provides excellent patient care and creates an environment in which customers feel valued and respected.
- Demonstrates a caring and interested manner, listens carefully to customers, and maintains appropriate communication and eye contact.
- Effectively communicates and problem-solves with customers, including those who are ill, angry, or emotionally distressed.
- Maintains strict patient confidentiality (HIPAA compliance) at all times.
- Promotes effective working relations and works proactively as part of a team to troubleshoot problems.
- Resolves differences cooperatively and recommends changes to enhance departmental service.
- Develops and fosters good verbal and written communication skills with patients, visitors, and hospital personnel.
- Contributes to the clinical education of students, trainees, and employees.
- Utilizes hospital resources and time respectfully and accountably, including assisting in other areas when patient volume is low.
- Seeks out innovative solutions for problems affecting care, service, quality, cost-effectiveness, or efficiency.
- Applies Lean principles and participates in Lean board activities.
Requirements
- Minimum Education: Completion of an accredited Health Science program.
- License/Certification Required: Registered by the American Registry of Radiographic Technology (ARRT). MRI certification preferred.
- Minimum Work Experience: 1 year of general radiology experience required. 3-5 years of general radiology experience or equivalent with 2 years of MRI experience preferred.
Skills
- Operate MRI scanner and auxiliary equipment to produce quality images.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including alternate shifts, on-call for evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Able to adapt to new programs and equipment upgrades as the radiological field advances.
- Effective organizational and time management skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Physical Requirements
- Light lifting, pushing, and pulling of 10-20 lbs occasionally.
- Frequent moving of objects less than 10 lbs.
- Frequent sitting with some walking, standing, squatting, bending, and reaching.
- Keyboard/computer use and/or repetitive motions may be required.
