Essential Functions
- Examine requests and verify orders for each assigned patient.
- Refer and question orders to the Radiologist before performing exams.
- Contact the ordering provider when there are discrepancies.
- Properly identify patients using two patient identifiers and assist them with a brief explanation of the procedures.
- Prepare patients for procedures with a full explanation and document on appropriate worksheets.
- Interview patients for a complete medical history and review EMRs to obtain pertinent clinical history.
- Record medical history on requisitions and correlate other test results and laboratory data with the exam being performed.
- Assume responsibility for the exam from beginning until completion of dictated results.
- Prepare and administer IV contrast according to departmental protocols, recording contrast type and amount when requested.
- Evaluate the technical quality of images and consult with a Radiologist if needed.
- Recognize abnormal anatomy and process additional, reconstructed images, and/or measurements as instructed.
- Perform basic patient care functions and inform appropriate nursing personnel of any changes in the patient's condition.
- Initiate life support measures for patients when necessary and assist in "code blue” procedures during medical emergencies.
- Perform MRI scanning and assist Physicians/PA during invasive procedures, practicing proper sterile technique.
- Conduct all invasive procedures in accordance with bloodborne pathogens, isolation, and infection control policies and procedures.
- Obtain medication or contrast material as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner.
- Practice radiation safety principles for self, employees, patients, and family members, following appropriate standards.
- Report malfunctioning equipment to the department director/manager/supervisor and clinical engineering/radiology engineer.
- Maintain knowledge and skills required to work safely in an environment with significant exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious disease.
- Adhere to hospital fire and safety procedures, attend all in-service classes, and complete all required safety modules.
- Operate the radiology computer system to include entering orders and charging procedures/supplies, and document contrast administration in the MAR.
- Maintain assigned work area in a neat and orderly fashion, keeping it completely stocked and promoting cleanliness in the workplace.
- Assist other medical personnel, such as anesthesia, when performing exams or services in conjunction with an MRI scan.
- Maintain knowledge of all MRI safety requirements for both staff and patients while in and around magnetic fields.
Skills
- Requires moderate to heavy physical efforts in lifting and moving patients, equipment, and supplies.
- Frequently may be required to stretch, bend, twist, squat, or kneel in the daily operation of the MRI department.
- May be exposed to various physical conditions throughout the day, such as walking on hard surfaces, climbing stairs, and being near moving equipment.
- Required to use radiation safety guidelines to prevent exposure to ionizing radiation.
