About the role

The practice of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is performed by radiologic technologists responsible for the use of radio frequencies (RF’s) within a magnetic field on humans of all ages (newborn to geriatric) for diagnostic, therapeutic, or research purposes. An MRI technologist performs MRI procedures utilizing MRI scanners and power injectors, producing cross-sectional and 3D images at the request of and for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner.

Responsibilities

• Perform all duties of an MRI Technologist I.
• Safely administer contrast or other imaging agents, including identification of incompatibilities and/or interactions.
• Assess patient risk for allergic reaction to contrast media and related medications prior to administration; follow appropriate escalation protocols.
• Evaluate lab values prior to administering contrast media or related medications and beginning the ordered examination.
• Provide accurate, age-appropriate explanations and instructions to patients and families; verify patient understanding and consent.
• Perform ordered exams or therapy in accordance with established imaging protocols while respecting patient ability and comfort.
• Adhere to policies and protocols to ensure expected outcomes are met.
• Document deviations from protocol and/or patient-specific issues that may impact image quality.
• Notify appropriate healthcare providers when an immediate clinical response is necessary based on procedural findings, patient condition, or other relevant concerns.
• Complete all required post-processing, image display, and transfer for physician review in a timely manner.
• Demonstrate timely order closure, charge entry, and PACS QA completion.
• Routinely cover open shifts as appropriate based on level of competency.

Requirements

• Certification by the American Registry of Radiology Technologists (ARRT), Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board (NMTCB), or American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT) within the first 90 days of hire.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification.

Qualifications

• Experienced and competent in routine and complex MRI studies.
• Complete understanding of technical standards, scope of practice, department and health system policies, and safety and service standards.
• Complete understanding of imaging equipment, image processing software, instrumentation, and ancillary patient care equipment.
