MRF-Maintenance Technician

FLSA classification: Non-exempt, hourly. Reports to Maintenance Supervisor.

About the role

Responsible for maintaining the day-to-day operation of equipment inside the Material Recovery Facility (MRF). This includes ensuring proper preventative maintenance inspections and troubleshooting on engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and production machines. The plant mechanic must accurately follow diagrams, sketches, operation manuals, manufacturer’s instructions, and engineering specifications to ensure functionality and reliability of heavy equipment, conveyors, screens, shredders, and the facility building.

Responsibilities

• Perform planned maintenance inspections (PM); diagnose, repair, and rebuild major equipment/components including balers, conveyors, hydraulic power packs, eddy currents, electro-magnetic belts, optical sorters, diverters, compressors, trash compactors, motors, glass breakers, wire tie systems, fans, pumps, forklifts, front-end loaders, and building equipment.
• Make necessary repairs to plant production and support equipment.
• Maintain inventory control of maintenance repair parts.
• Work with outside vendors for troubleshooting and repairing equipment.
• Clean jams, clogs, and apply lubricants to machinery components.
• Ensure all parts of conveyors are clean to prevent failure.
• Replenish fluids and components of engines and machinery.
• Schedule and prioritize maintenance and repair work on equipment; adjust work procedures to meet production needs.
• Inspect equipment to diagnose defects; generate work orders and evaluate repair work upon completion.
• Perform highly technical work on hydraulic systems, fabrication projects, and rebuilding assignments.
• Locate, correct, and adjust defects in light and heavy-duty vehicular and mechanical equipment.
• Adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
• Read and interpret sketches, diagrams, and electrical schematics.
• Act as a lead worker by instructing, directing, assigning, reviewing, and checking the work of others.
• Inspect the quality of third-party repairs or rebuilds; recommend measures to improve production, equipment performance, and product quality.
• Perform service calls for emergency breakdowns; requires a flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends.
• Manage facilities improvements with contractors and resolve issues with building management.
• Occasionally run small errands and contribute to a positive, fun work environment.
• Perform all other duties as assigned in a professional and efficient manner.

Requirements

• Working knowledge of electrical and control systems with a high level of competency in a specific trade (e.g., welding, millwright, mechanics) and functional ability in multiple areas.
• Knowledge and skills to work on conveyor belts and motors.
• Understanding of automotive repairs and preventative maintenance principles.
• Forklift trained.
• Trained on all needed hand tools to complete tasks safely and correctly.
• Able to perform preventive maintenance on the BALER (replace hydraulic components, adjust baler knives, safely use high-torque machines).
• Able to perform preventive maintenance on BALER tier system (troubleshoot and replace components).
• Trained on making hydraulic hoses.
• Able to perform preventive maintenance on PRI-MAX (clean shafts, replace filters, clean cooler fans).
• Able to perform preventive maintenance on all conveyors (change buckets, replace take-ups).
• Trained on advanced conveyor repair (replace bearings, change transmissions, replace head/tail pulleys).
• Trained on the correct and safe use of rigging equipment.
• Ability to multi-task and manage multiple priorities.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to work under limited supervision.
• Ability to recognize routine mechanical difficulties and malfunctions.
• Ability to use a variety of hand, power tools, and equipment.

• Ability to work as part of a team.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum of 5 years of mechanic service and repair experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Excellent verbal and written English communication skills; ability to read, comprehend, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, professional journals, and governmental regulations.
• Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the public.
• Bilingual in Spanish and English is a plus.
• Ability to calculate figures and amounts, including basic algebra and geometry.
• Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization and interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear.
• Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Work Environment

• Drug-free and alcohol-free workplace.
• Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles.
• Occasionally exposed to wet/humid conditions, high/precarious/confined places, and vibration.
• Noise level is usually loud and environment may be dirty.
• Required to wear protective outfits, including gloves, safety footwear, and hardhat.

Pay

$23–$32 hourly.
