Moving Specialist

About the role

Reporting to the Building Services Manager, the Moving Specialist is responsible for moving, hauling and storing various office items and equipment throughout the University, and will operate moving equipment such as trucks, forklifts, and hand‑operated tools. The position may serve as a backup to the Moving & Hauling Lead Worker in their absence by assisting with estimating, scheduling and directing work of assigned staff or contract workers. This is a designated emergency personnel position; the employee must report during emergency and inclement‑weather situations.

Responsibilities

• Move, haul, and store office items and equipment across campus.
• Operate moving equipment, including trucks, commercial fork trucks, and hand‑operated tools.
• Disassemble and reassemble furniture and equipment.
• Assist the Moving & Hauling Lead Worker with estimating, scheduling, and directing staff or contract workers when needed.
• Report for duty during emergencies and inclement‑weather events.
• Perform additional duties as requested and support a healthy work environment.
• Uphold the university’s Standards of Conduct, Virginia Tech Principles of Community, and the motto “Ut Prosim” (That I May Serve).

Requirements

• Knowledge of moving and hauling practices.
• Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
• Ability to operate large trucks, including commercial fork trucks, and other moving equipment.
• Capability to safely lift and handle heavy objects weighing 100 lb or more, maneuver materials up and down stairs, and work from elevated stations such as ladders and scaffolds.
• Physical stamina to stand, walk, reach, bend, push/pull for long periods.
• Effective communication and teamwork skills; ability to understand and follow workplace directions.
• Willingness to work in all weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
• Flexibility to work additional hours or shifts as department needs dictate.
• Designation as emergency personnel with required reporting during emergencies and inclement weather.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience working with a moving company.
• Experience delivering and assembling furniture.
• Experience in a university or large commercial setting.

Pay

Salary range: $38,000 – $44,000 (Pay Band 2). Non‑Exempt position eligible for overtime.

Schedule

Full‑time, 40 hours per week.
