Motor Vehicle Mechanic

US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location. Passing a pre-employment drug screen and a government background check is required. Must be able to successfully pass a National Agency Check (NAC) within 60 days of hire, if required. Must be available for any shift and willing to work weekends and other hours as needed. Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English.

About the Role

The Motor Vehicle Mechanic repairs, rebuilds, or overhauls major assemblies of internal combustion automobiles, buses, trucks, or tractors. Diagnoses, analyzes, and troubleshoots vehicle malfunctions and repair problems.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair government vehicles.
• Complete maintenance tickets and repair orders in a timely manner.
• Dispose of waste materials per regulations and applicable laws.
• Stay abreast of latest technology and installation procedures.
• Inspect, diagnose, and isolate vehicle and equipment malfunctions; troubleshoot, trace, and locate defects and/or causes of mechanical problems to determine type and extent of necessary repairs.
• Repair all assigned vehicles and equipment to ensure they are safe and dependable.
• Repair lighting systems, sirens, wheel bearings, radiators, heating and air-conditioning systems, springs, hydraulic systems, catalytic converters, and fuel pumps.
• Utilize on-board computer diagnostic systems and other test equipment to test automotive computer control and emission systems; assess and analyze malfunctions of machinery using microcomputers, calipers, gauges, and other equipment.
• Interact with customers to keep them informed of vehicle status, repairs needed, etc.
• Inspect and test equipment for mechanical defects and replace worn parts.
• Remove, replace, adjust, or clean defective parts or components.
• Flush radiators and replace anti-freeze solutions.
• Perform oil changes, check fluids, diagnose tread wear, replace batteries, and troubleshoot problems.
• Perform engine tune-ups.
• Utilize appropriate techniques and procedures in accordance with manufacturer's specifications in armoring vehicles as directed.
• Repair automotive locks.
• Independently install new vehicle equipment, such as radios, sirens, wire cages, lights, etc.
• Perform State vehicle safety and emission inspections on owned vehicles.
• Identify necessary parts, equipment, and supplies needed to complete repair or preventative check.
• Estimate cost and labor time for corrective repairs.
• Respond to emergency road calls for disabled vehicles and make minor adjustments or have the vehicle towed back for repairs.
• Road test vehicles during and occasionally upon completion of maintenance/repair work.
• Respond to emails and telephone calls.
• Ensure the necessary provision of vehicles and support for customers.
• Work in a team environment and prioritize and schedule multiple tasks.
• Perform all other position-related duties as assigned or requested.

Work Environment

• Work is performed in a shop environment that is moderately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
• Exposure to disagreeable fumes, cuts, and bruises from using tools in close places, and hazards of moving vehicles such as forklifts and sweepers in the shop area.
• Regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear.
• Frequently required to walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, working in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
• Occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and smell.
• Frequently lifts items weighing 40-45 pounds and occasionally in excess of 50 pounds.
• Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, extreme heat, and vibration.
• Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; and risk of electrical shock.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually loud or may include unsafe conditions.
• Responsible for continuously developing and maintaining a safe work environment, including questioning nonstandard operations or environmental factors that may involve unmitigated hazards, and providing feedback to supervisors and managers on all safety issues.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 3 years minimum experience in the problem diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of light, medium, heavy, and/or specialized automotive equipment, other heavy equipment, and FAV vehicles.
• Valid and current state driver's license.
• Knowledgeable of gasoline and diesel vehicle preventive maintenance programs.
• Excellent record of safety operations and working knowledge of safety standards for motor vehicle mechanical and electrical systems.
• Considerable knowledge of the operating systems used in motor vehicles and equipment.
• Considerable knowledge of the practices and tools used in the maintenance and diagnostics of vehicles and equipment.
• Considerable knowledge of computer, electrical, transistorized, and other non-mechanical systems and how they tie-in with and affect the operation of mechanical systems.
• Considerable knowledge of the standard tools, equipment, test procedures, and practices used in the repair and preventative maintenance of fleet and training vehicles.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical and related malfunctions.
• Ability to read and understand technical manuals, references, and specifications.
• Ability to write routine correspondences, maintenance logs, and order forms.
• Ability to operate a forklift, power tools, wrenches, diagnostic equipment, and jacks.
• Ability to complete paperwork associated with vehicle maintenance and repairs.
• Ability to manipulate and use hand tools and hydraulic equipment.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact at all levels of management and with subordinate team members.

Pay

$22.77 per hour. The compensation range or hourly rate listed for this position is provided as a good-faith estimate of what the company intends to offer at the time this posting was issued.
