AGL is looking for a Motor Vehicle Mechanic to work in Fort Drum, NY. This role ensures all vehicles meet Army technical and safety standards before storage, redistribution, or disposal.

About the role

The Motor Vehicle Mechanic performs inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance on Army tactical and non-tactical wheeled vehicles processed through a contractor-managed equipment turn-in site. The mechanic supports Army property accountability by identifying deficiencies, completing corrective actions, and documenting all services in compliance with Army Technical Manuals (TMs), AR 750-1, DA PAM 750-8, and contract requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Repair, rebuild, or overhaul major assemblies of internal combustion automobiles, buses, trucks, or tractors, including:
    • Diagnosing the source of trouble and determining the extent of repairs required
    • Replacing worn or broken parts such as piston rings, bearings, or other engine parts
    • Grinding and adjusting valves
    • Rebuilding carburetors
    • Overhauling transmissions
    • Repairing fuel injection, lighting, and ignition systems
  • Conduct inspections on wheeled vehicles and trailers during turn-in to verify condition, serviceability, and compliance with Army standards.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, fuel, and brake system malfunctions.
  • Perform Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS) using Army standards and TMs.
  • Recommend condition codes (serviceable/unserviceable) based on inspection results.
  • Perform corrective and preventive maintenance on systems including engines, transmissions, steering, suspension, electrical, and braking systems.
  • Conduct services such as lubrication, filter changes, tire replacement, and part swaps.
  • Identify vehicles beyond economical repair and prepare documentation for turn-in or disposal.
  • Support maintenance and readiness of site-owned Material Handling Equipment (MHE) when required.
  • Record findings, repairs, and maintenance actions on DA Form 2404, DA Form 5988-E, or automated maintenance records (e.g., GCSS-Army).
  • Maintain complete and accurate maintenance logs in compliance with ISO 9001:2015 QMS.
  • Support audit readiness by ensuring records are updated and error-free.
  • Follow all Army, OSHA, and company safety regulations while performing maintenance.
  • Ensure compliance with HAZMAT handling, spill prevention, and environmental standards.
  • Maintain clean and safe work areas, tools, and equipment.
  • Coordinate with Supply Technicians, Inspectors, and Material Coordinators to align vehicle processing with turn-in requirements.
  • Provide technical expertise during high-volume or mass turn-in events.
  • Assist with preparing vehicles for storage, shipment, or transfer to redistribution sites.

Physical Demands & Working Environment

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform routine standing, walking, bending, and reaching tasks in warehouse and field environments.
  • Must meet all physical requirements necessary to perform assigned duties, including working in extreme heat or cold, high or low humidity, blowing sand and dust, confined spaces, heights, and other inclement weather conditions.
  • This position involves working both indoors and outdoors, periodic overtime, and exposure to heat, dust, cold, and adverse weather conditions.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is preferred; however, equivalent relevant work experience may be substituted.
  • 3–5 years of experience in motor vehicle maintenance (Army tactical/non-tactical vehicle experience strongly preferred).
  • Familiarity with U.S. Army maintenance procedures, PMCS, and TMs.
  • Knowledge of Army maintenance regulations (AR 750-1, DA PAM 750-8).
  • Experience with Army logistics systems such as GCSS-Army.
  • Understanding of condition code classification and Army turn-in documentation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Ability to diagnose and repair vehicle mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret Army TMs, schematics, and diagrams.
  • Effective recordkeeping and reporting skills.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills in high-tempo environments.
  • Valid driver’s license with proof of vehicle insurance.
  • Must have a Real ID.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Common Access Card (CAC).
  • Must be able to obtain Tier 1/ NACI (Public trust) background eligibility.
  • Basic proficiency in the English language (reading and writing).
  • Must receive a favorable background check and drug testing results.
  • Must be able to travel within the United States as required (up to 25% travel).

Pay

Pay range: $22.73 per hour, plus $5.09 Health & Welfare.
