Motor Vehicle Inspector (NY HELPS)

Duties Description

Inspect the mechanical condition of buses, heavy duty trucks, vans, suburban’s, station wagons and other commercial vehicles.

Check both controlled and preventative maintenance programs, driver’s hours of labor records and facility of fleet operators.

Perform post-accidents inspections, testify at hearings when required and keep records and submitted reports of inspections.

Enforce driver, vehicle and hazardous materials regulations.

Perform duties independently without direct supervision and be responsible for scheduling your own work and adhering to your own timetable. However, workload will be assigned by the supervisor.

May be required to inspect other bus inspection areas.

Minimum Qualifications

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).

To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b/c, candidates must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications for this position.

• Either 1. three years of experience in the repair and/or mechanical inspection of buses (15 passengers or more) and/or heavy-duty trucks (GVWR 18,000 pounds or more) which must have included one year experience with antilock brake systems. Experience limited to maintenance, repair, or inspection activities obtained while working in a commercial garage, where most of the work is primarily related to automobiles, pick-up trucks, small vans, or ambulettes and only occasionally to buses or heavy-duty trucks, is NOT qualifying;
• An associate’s degree in automotive or diesel technology AND one year of experience as described above;
• Graduated from a one-year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology** AND two years of experience as described above.

Important: You must indicate on your application the capacity and/or weight of the types of equipment you have experience either repairing or inspecting. You must also indicate that you have the required one-year experience with antilock brake systems.

Additional Comments

Candidates must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter. This position requires considerable travel.

Candidates must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

The salary range listed reflects the full range for this graded position. For new State employees appointed into graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
