Motor Fuels Tax Auditor
About the role
The North Carolina Department of Revenue is seeking a Tax Auditor in the Motor Fuels Section of the Examination Division. This is a full-time, permanent position with a hybrid remote work schedule and State Benefits, including health insurance, paid vacation, paid sick time, paid holidays, as well as retirement.
Responsibilities
- Examine motor fuels tax returns and records to ensure taxpayer compliance with the Revenue laws of North Carolina, as well as conduct audits for International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) and International Registration Plan (IRP) purposes.
- Perform accurate and complete audits of financial books and records of motor fuel suppliers, distributors, and service stations registered with the Excise Tax Division to determine tax compliance with multiple tax schedules.
- Interpret and apply tax laws to ensure compliance with revenue laws and motor vehicle laws using professional auditing and accounting principles and practices.
- Maintain an audit plan, including selecting audit candidates, scheduling taxpayer interviews, reviewing provided records, and preparing and submitting audit reports for timely review.
- Conduct audits at the taxpayer's place of business, requiring some overnight and out-of-state travel.
Requirements
- A vehicle and a valid driver's license are required due to travel requirements.
- Basic knowledge of auditing and accounting principles and practices.
- Basic proficiency with spreadsheet and word processing software.
- Basic knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and Income Tax.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Economics, Accounting or related field with at least twelve semester hours of accounting from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Related fields considered are Administrative Science, Business Law, Business Management, Business Operations, Finance, Financial Management, Public Administration, Public Sector & Government Administration Management, Tax, Tax Law and Trust & Wealth Management.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of auditing and accounting principles and practices.
- Proficiency with spreadsheet and word processing software.
- Understanding of the Internal Revenue Code and Income Tax.

Pay
The minimum starting salary is $54,137. The recruitment range is $54,137 - $87,654 effective July 1, 2025.
