Motor Equipment Operator

Distinguishing Features of the Class

This position involves operating a variety of motor equipment, limited by the class of license possessed by the incumbent. Work is performed under general supervision of a supervisory‑level employee, and the incumbent will supervise subordinates assigned to specific projects and perform related work as required.

Typical Work Activities

• Operate a variety of motor equipment, such as one‑man road patcher packers, trucks, sweepers, backhauls, and auxiliary equipment.
• Supervise a small work group in rebuilding and repairing catch basins, mains, sewers, hydrants, street repairs, patching streets, and cleaning streets.
• Perform minor repairs on motor equipment and service small pumps and equipment.
• Conduct routine preventive maintenance on all vehicles.
• Operate a television camera outfit to monitor and report the condition of sewer mains and laterals for immediate or future repairs.
• Maintain records of time, supplies, and equipment used; report work completed on projects to the supervisor.
• Participate in various street maintenance and repair activities.
• Provide services for governmental operations, such as transporting food for the School District.
• Operate recreational and maintenance equipment for the recreation department.
• Perform routine cleaning of screens, unplugging and maintenance of pumps, sample collection, and centrifuge operation for the Binghamton/Johnson City Joint Sewage Plant.
• Supervise a small work crew.

Minimum Qualifications & Special Requirements

• Possession of a CDL‑B motor vehicle operator license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of appointment, and maintenance of the license throughout the appointment.
• Broome County residency required at the time of appointment.
• Successful completion of a pre‑employment drug test.
• Mechanical aptitude.
• Dependability.
• Ability to operate a personal computer and use common office software (word processing, spreadsheet, database) with acceptable accuracy and speed.
• Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
