Mosquito Research Field Techincian/Associate

2-year term, full-time (40 hr/wk) positions with benefits. Temporary communal housing is available.

About the role

Join our research team on the front lines of mosquito control and endangered species protection and management. You will directly contribute to preventing extinctions and caring for Hawaiian ecosystems by conducting research and management projects for the recovery of Maui’s endangered bird species and deployment of landscape-level mosquito control.

Responsibilities

• Conducts research and management projects for the recovery of Maui’s endangered bird species and deployment of landscape-level mosquito control.
• Captures mosquitoes and collects related data for avian disease studies in native, restored, and non-native forest habitats.
• Works, hikes, and camps in beautiful remote areas for up to 4-10 days with field teams of 2-6 people. Most work requires the ability to hike long distances.
• Provides direction and guidance for peers, associates, volunteers, and interns.
• Assists with logistics and planning for field research operations.
• Helps maintain and manage electronic records of program operations, including databases.
• Enters field and Geographic Information System (GIS) data into computer programs for information summary and reporting.
• Writes trip summaries from field work completed.
• Participates in conscientious adherence to all safety and research protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Regularly works in and around helicopters and will be trained to act as a helicopter operations manager.
• Drives project vehicles both on and off-road.
• Maintains field equipment and field stations.
• Assists with public outreach and education activities.
