Position Summary
The Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for evaluating and determining the eligibility of loan applications.
Responsibilities
- Authorizing and underwriting loans.
- Reviewing and verifying loan applications and supporting documentation.
- Analyzing loan risk and requesting additional information as necessary.
- Preparing reports on assessment findings.
- Making loan eligibility decisions and approving or rejecting applications.
- Reviewing and specifying loan conditions as necessary.
- Regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
Essential Functions
- Complying with industry-related regulations, requirements and state/federal laws as applicable to the job duties of this position.
- Documenting and effectively communicating reasons for the approval/rejection of loans.
- Returning applications with additional documentation to the loan officer for review.
- Experiencing with Encompass and Encompass closing docs.
- Experienced with FNMA DU/AUS, FHA, VA, USDA and investor guidelines.
- Ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
- Ensuring compliance with company policies and guidelines.
- Maintaining compliance with and adhering to all state and federal regulations and Bank policies and procedures, including, but not limited to Bank Secrecy Act, SAR, CTR, FACT ACT, Community Reinvestment Act, EEO, and fair employment practices.
Minimum Educational & Experience Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent required.
- A bachelor’s degree in business, banking, or finance preferred.
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in mortgage loan underwriting.
Minimum Skill Requirements
- Professional and effective verbal and written communications.
- Detail-oriented with strong data analysis skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Proficient with MS Office.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- High mathematical aptitude.
- Good working knowledge of mortgage loan processing and relevant legal regulations.
Physical Demands
- Continuous stationary position, particularly, but not limited to, at a desktop computer.
- Continuous repetitive use of hands/arms; particularly concerning to typing, writing, phone & computer use.
- Continuous communication: verbal and written, in-person, phone and electronic.
