About the role

Radiological Control Technicians (Monitors) perform surveillance of radiological work areas to detect and document the level and type of ionizing radiation/radioactivity in accordance with radiological control regulations. Performs and documents air, water, solid and surface radioactivity/radiation surveys using instruments designed to detect type and level of activity. Monitors also determine usage and maintenance of nuclear containment apparatus and respond to radiological incidents to ensure employee and environmental safety.

Work is performed in the shipbuilding construction environment involving exposure to outside temperatures (both summer and winter), confined spaces, and elevated work areas. In addition, crawling, lifting, climbing vertical ladders and wearing respiratory equipment will be expected.

Responsibilities

Monitors must also possess the flexibility to work rotating shifts. The Monitor Trainee candidate must attend and meet the requirements of the Radiological Control Technician Qualification School (RCTQS), a 22 week course of intensive academic and practical training, located at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Ability to apply knowledge of algebraic and geometric calculation
  • Basic knowledge of biology and chemistry
  • Pass a complete physical examination
  • Acquire an interim confidential security clearance

Qualifications

  • Transcript to reflect successful completion of algebra, geometry, biology and chemistry
  • Associate Degree in Applied Sciences
  • Prior military experience

Pay

Salary Range: $37,000.00 to $48,000.00. The anticipated salary range represents the estimated base pay for this role. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and other job-related factors, and may vary from the posted range.

Full-Time, Multiple shifts, 10%-25% travel requirements
