Monitor Part Time

VOALA (Volunteers of America) is a non-profit human services organization committed to serving people in need, strengthening families, and building communities. VOALA provides a variety of social services to Los Angeles area communities such as Head Start programs, Upward Bound college prep programs, veterans’ services, homeless shelters, low-income housing programs, and drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

About the role

The Monitor is an entry-level position focused on providing security for the program premises and ensuring the safety of program clients, visitors, and employees. Driving ability is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Shelter Security
  • Shelter Entrance Monitoring: Monitor and authorize entrance and departure of employees, participants, visitors, guests, and other persons to guard against theft and maintain security of premises. The front door to the shelter is the only permitted entrance and exit.
  • Bag & Person Screening: Screen all participants’ persons and belongings upon entry to ensure safety and security. Treat every participant with dignity and professionalism during screening.
  • Patrol premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion, ensuring security of doors, windows, and gates. Walk the facility and make reports as needed.
• Shelter Safety
  • Observe shelter operations during patrols to ensure safety; report and correct spills, unsafe working conditions, or defective equipment.
  • Know the location of fire exits and be prepared to assist participants in emergencies.
  • Monitor clients, conduct room checks, maintain records of client compliance with program rules, and report to clinical/case management staff.
  • Call police or fire department in emergencies, such as fire or presence of unauthorized persons.
• Asset Protection
  • Report all suspicious events to a direct supervisor.
  • Complete written reports and incident logs of daily activities and irregularities, including unusual occurrences, equipment or property damage, theft, and presence of unauthorized persons.
• Client/Participant Support
  • Answer telephones, take messages for clients and staff, monitor doors, and greet visitors.
  • Maintain office housekeeping, ensuring common areas, laundry areas, and restrooms are clean, disinfected, and fully operational.
  • Assist shelter staff during service provision, including meal preparation/serving, monitoring client self-administration of prescribed medication, and setting up for classes, meetings, recreation, and other program events.
• Driving Tasks (for licensed Monitors)
  • Transport program participants to and from locations such as human service sites, work sites, and medical facilities.
  • Assist passengers in securing wheelchairs, car seats, and other mobility devices.
  • Ensure passenger safety and operate the vehicle safely at all times.
  • Maintain trip records, mileage, and gasoline usage logs.
  • Maintain the program vehicle in good operating condition, clean it after each use, and arrange for routine maintenance and repairs.
• Act as a role model for participants at all times, prioritizing clients’ needs and demonstrating professionalism.

Requirements

• Must pass a fingerprint clearance, background check (including criminal history), and employment/education verifications.
• Current TB screening and immunization records (within 5 days of hire).
• Current BLS Certification (within 15 days of hire).
• Completion of all required trainings (within 30 days of hire).
• Ability to perform under emotionally stressful circumstances, dealing with difficult, uncooperative, or potentially aggressive clients.
• Must successfully complete VOALA safety training within 30 days of hire.
• Must report to work on-site each day of active employment.
• As a Mandated Reporter, must report any instance of physical or sexual abuse to proper authorities.

Preferred Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Current California driver’s license, clean driving record, and knowledge of California driving laws.
• Database familiarity.
• Clean driving record to be insurable by VOALA insurance.

Pay

$19.02 - $20.02 per hour.
