Molecular Biologist II

About the role

Under the supervision of the Newborn Screening Molecular Branch Manager, this role performs highly complex advanced molecular genetic procedures to identify mutations causing various genetic disorders. This includes DNA extraction, electrophoresis, PCR, real-time PCR, automated DNA sequencing, and DNA sequence analysis. The role also involves ensuring the accuracy and continuity of testing through quality control measures.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate and interpret highly complex data related to molecular genetic procedures.
• Maintain accuracy and continuity of testing through following QC guidelines and monitoring reagents, materials, and assays.
• Ensure proper specimen handling, storage, and tracking, and accurately enter patient demographic information and test results.
• Perform and document preparatory and supporting work for DNA testing, including preparing reagents, controls, reaction tubes, and tips.
• Perform equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, including cleaning and maintaining automated DNA sequencers and disposing of waste.
• Communicate abnormal test results promptly and consult with upper-level personnel for problem resolution.
• Conduct computer database searches and assist in research and development of new testing procedures.

Requirements

• At least 2 years of molecular testing experience or 1 year of clinical molecular testing experience.
• A bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution.
• Ability to work on Saturdays as part of a rotating schedule.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of laboratory safety and sample-handling techniques.
• Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
• Ability to use various laboratory equipment and computer software.
• Ability to work collaboratively with team members and prioritize tasks.
• Ability to recognize and solve work area problems and maintain work area instruments and equipment.

Skills

• Manipulation of standard laboratory equipment with speed, accuracy, and safety.
• Visual distinction of color differences as required for testing procedures.

$4,565.12 - $5,249.89 monthly

Schedule

Regular, with occasional Saturday shifts as part of a rotating schedule.
