About the role

The Modeling and Simulation Engineer will focus on building digital models for unmanned, autonomous, submersible systems. This role requires an understanding of digital engineering, modeling and simulation tools, and how to apply those tools to mission‑level assessments of distributed, unmanned operations. Responsibilities include developing modeling and simulation environments to enable and demonstrate new autonomy capabilities, supporting multi‑year subsea data intelligence research programs, and contributing to a decision‑support framework for uncrewed underwater vehicles that can adapt in real time to changing environmental conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Modeling and Simulation Engineer for submersible systems, emphasizing platform and sensor modeling for autonomous systems.
  • Develop modeling and simulation frameworks that demonstrate new capability in virtual environments prior to physical deployment.
  • Contribute to technical deliverables of industry‑academia research projects aimed at intelligent operation of unmanned and autonomous maritime systems.
  • Assist with development of modeling and simulation strategies that balance speed, cost, and value based on system and project objectives.
  • Engage with partners and customers to understand needs and elicit project requirements.
  • Collaborate with software engineering and business development teams to develop new products and services using modeling and simulation tools and insights.

Required Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizen eligible for a DoD Secret Clearance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering) and 6+ years of relevant experience.
  • OR Master’s degree in a relevant field and 4+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with physics‑based, research‑grade modeling and simulation tools, including development and use for assessment of novel technology.
  • Experience with numerical methods and scientific software development in general‑purpose programming languages (e.g., Python, C++, MATLAB).

Desired Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a relevant field.
  • Experience with unmanned and autonomous maritime systems research (e.g., uncrewed surface vessels, uncrewed underwater vessels).
  • Familiarity with maritime sensors such as acoustics, magnetic, positioning, etc.
  • Experience using AI/ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, Flux).
  • Experience in Digital Twin development.
  • Understanding of Navy and DoD mission, problem set, and strategy for integration of autonomous systems.
