Modeling and Simulation Engineer
About the role
Axiom Space is a human space exploration company building era‑defining space infrastructure and delivering technology‑driven solutions that empower civilization to transcend Earth. The company is pioneering a next‑generation orbital settlement and provides commercial human spaceflight services and advanced spacesuits for the Moon and beyond. The Modeling and Simulation Engineer will support the EVA SE&I team by developing modeling and simulation assets that assess EVA spacesuit performance for analysis and verification purposes.
Responsibilities
- Develop high‑fidelity spacesuit fluid, thermal, and electrical simulation math models using existing frameworks and nodal analysis methods (NASA’s Trick simulation and GUNNS software).
- Collaborate with spacesuit subsystem teams to ensure models accurately reflect design and operational details of life‑support components.
- Debug, test, verify, and validate model packages with test data.
- Perform and document simulation verification and validation activities.
- Develop and implement methods for assessing simulation credibility, including uncertainty characterization and results robustness/sensitivity analysis.
- Incorporate models into the larger simulation framework and ensure proper simulation execution.
- Apply systems engineering principles to the development and documentation of the simulation framework and constituent models.
- Use the simulation to evaluate spacesuit performance, conduct trade studies, and assess design changes.
- Use simulation to verify system requirements.
- Support other Systems Engineering and Integration functions as needed.
- Communicate project progress, status, and potential issues to stakeholders and leadership.
- Implement and maintain agile project‑management methodologies throughout the project lifecycle.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Experience designing and implementing or modeling and simulating fluid, thermal, or electrical systems.
- Experience performing simulation credibility assessments.
- 2+ years of programming experience with systems‑level languages such as C/C++ and/or Python.
- Experience performing simulation software verification and validation activities.
- Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to present technical data to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Track record of delivering results in ambiguous, fast‑moving environments.
- Demonstrated organization skills to meet tight deadlines with high‑quality results.
- Level II: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical field (ABET‑accredited preferred) and 2–6 years of experience, or equivalent combination.
- Level III: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical field (ABET‑accredited preferred) and 4–9 years of experience, or equivalent combination.
- Level IV: Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Engineering (preferred) and 7–12 years of experience, or equivalent combination.
- Level V: Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Engineering (preferred) and 10–16 years of experience, or equivalent combination.
