About the role
The Mobility Coordinator position at WTA coordinates the paratransit eligibility certification process, serving as a key resource for ADA regulations and Reasonable Modification Coordinator. This role involves representing WTA at appeals hearings, monitoring and resolving issues related to rider access, conducting location assessments, and maintaining confidentiality.
Responsibilities
- Eligibility Coordination: Oversees and performs all aspects of the paratransit application process to determine eligibility for new and re-certifying applicants. Communicates eligibility decisions and appropriate client information to WTA personnel.
- Serves as ADA Reasonable Modification Coordinator, issuing decisions and managing no-show violations.
- Conducts location assessments, ensuring ADA compliance and monitoring rider functionality.
- Completes required certification programs and attends conferences and training as necessary.
- Internal Support: Develops and provides training for WTA personnel on ADA compliance, passenger assistance, and eligibility process.
- External Support: Coordinates with the WTA Travel Trainer for eligibility assessments and on-going training.
- Explains WTA and other transportation services to the public and presents to various organizations.
- Researches and develops grant opportunities related to paratransit services.
- Provides technical support to the grant application process.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Health, Human Services or related field, preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of two (2) years’ related work experience involving customer service, public contact, and general administrative skills. Experience in a medical or social-service environment or working with the elderly and/or people with disabilities, preferred.
- Skills: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, knowledge of disability issues, ADA legislation, and public transportation regulations, ability to communicate effectively, and strong organizational and decision-making skills.
Qualifications
- Knowledge: Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment; Microsoft Office software platform; English language, grammar, and punctuation; Whatcom County geography; disabilities, medical diagnostic terminology, and related issues; Americans with Disabilities Act, particularly public transportation provisions of the Act.
- Skills and Abilities: Integrity, professionalism, confidentiality; understanding and applying WTA and Departmental policies and procedures; working effectively with co-workers at all levels of the organization; making consistent, fair, and well-considered decisions; handling stress and continuing to perform duties efficiently; communicating effectively, both orally and in writing; collaborating with WTA staff from all departments; sensitivity and patience when working with the elderly and people with disabilities; detailed knowledge of WTA transit routes and service area; proficiency with WTA’s proprietary software and systems; transit experience; knowledge of disability issues, ADA legislation, and other regulations governing public transportation.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to perform essential job functions including communicating, standing, stooping or bending, all for extended periods of time; walking; climbing stairs and ladders; pushing/pulling approximately 50 pounds for a distance up to 10 feet, and lifting and carrying approximately 30 pounds; looking under vehicles and lifting items weighing up to 15 pounds overhead; full and complete use of all limbs to assist people with disabilities; prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
