Mobile Library Team Supervising Technician
About the Role
This position has immediate charge of a small community library or mobile library. Incumbents are responsible for the supervision of other library paraprofessional and clerical staff, requiring a specialized working knowledge of library functions, services, terminology, paraprofessional library procedures, Auditor-Controller Internal Control procedures, and the Library’s Integrated Library System. The role involves instructing, coordinating, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating the performance of lower-level support staff, as well as handling telephone calls and performing physical tasks such as bending, stooping, and lifting.
Responsibilities
- Oversees the operations of a very small community library or mobile library program, including supervision of assigned library personnel.
- Interprets library policy and procedures to the public and staff.
- Drives mobile library vehicles assigned to the program.
- Analyzes customers’ needs to provide responsive library services, answers reference questions, and assists patrons with registration, resource use, and material location.
- Assists with coordination and implementation of library programs and activities; prepares and makes presentations about library programs and services to groups of all ages.
- Interviews, selects, trains, evaluates, and schedules subordinate staff.
- Maintains library records and prepares reports on circulation, book stock, and other activities.
- Utilizes electronic resources for cataloging; selects books and items to be added or deleted from the collection.
- Arranges for the upkeep of the library facility in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
- Oversees the proper handling of fines, fees, banking, reconciliation, and safeguarding processes according to internal control procedures.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Five (5) years of experience performing paraprofessional library duties, with two (2) years involving lead or supervisory responsibility over lower-level library employees.
- Some experience communicating and/or presenting to groups of all ages, including youth/high school students.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Ability to bend, stoop, lift, and/or move books, and move around the library during the work shift.
- Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License.
- Willingness to travel to various library locations, work evenings, and weekends.
Qualifications
- Specialized working knowledge of library principles, policies, procedures, terminology, and services.
- Knowledge of basic reference tools, the Dewey Decimal system, and collection arrangements.
- Skill in customer service and operating library equipment (e.g., computer terminals, microfilm/microfiche projectors).
- Ability to organize and disseminate information, communicate effectively, and relate well with people of all age groups.
- Ability to plan, supervise, and evaluate the work of others, and solve problems.

Additional Information
Educational/Bilingual Incentive: Incumbents may be eligible for an educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree not required for the classification. Bilingual incentive may also be available depending on operational need and certification of skill.
This position is represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and is eligible for overtime compensation.
