About the role
Operate special-purpose machines and equipment for the production and cutting of customer parts, strictly adhering to client job specifications while ensuring good quality work.
Responsibilities
- Perform machine setups including calibration, cleaning, loading and unloading work products (lifting work pieces manually or using appropriate equipment), controlling and adjusting functions as required, securing work pieces in fixtures, and observing machine operations
- Insert all production materials in the various parts of the machine where they are supposed to be to enhance production output
- Inspect and measure welded work pieces to verify conformance to customer specifications using instruments such as preset comparator, fixed gauges, calipers, and micrometers
- Maintain welders and special-purpose machines, including replacing worn machine accessories such as collet pads or fixture pads, cleaning equipment using solvent and rags, lubricating equipment as needed, and performing other maintenance duties as assigned
- Ensure equipment is operating properly and safely; report and repair equipment internally and externally with suppliers (plasma machine oxy, crane, truck, dust collector, compressor, forklift, etc.); troubleshoot machine problems to determine actual faults
- Operate hand-held air-driven tools, electrical tools, tappers, forklift, and crane (required certifications must be obtained)
- Inspect parts with precision and measuring tools to ensure they meet requirements, customer specifications, and Company Policy
- Test the operation of machines periodically to guarantee proper running; fix issues that might occur during the shift; check output to discover any machine-related mistakes or flaws
- Keep records of approved and defective units, final products, and maintenance schedules; maintain activity logs
- Study blueprints from work layout to ensure accuracy in production tasks
- Ensure timely preparation and availability of all production materials to avoid shortage during production
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- 1–2+ years of experience as a machine operator in a production/manufacturing setting
- Completion of the established Skill Pie per location
- Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers; extremely organized
- Working knowledge of diverse high-speed machinery and measurement tools (caliper, micrometer, etc.)
- Ability to operate light equipment; good knowledge of mechanical devices
- Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service
- Ability to work independently and as a team member to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices
- Strong attention to details, analytical skills, exceptional judgment, dependability, excellent teamwork skills, good time management skills, creativity, problem-solving ability, hardworking and persistent, professional competence, proactive approach
- Forklift certification
- Current/active driver's license
Qualifications
- Technical Degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- 3–5+ years of increasingly responsible experience as a machine operator in a production/manufacturing setting
- Welder certification
- Crane certification
Schedule and travel
- Travel 10% of time for meetings at other SSAB locations, deliveries, trainings, seminars, and conferences as needed
