Under the general direction of the Laboratory Manager, plans, sets up, carries out, and evaluates diagnostic laboratory tests and procedures. Performs phlebotomy duties.

Responsibilities

  • Must be courteous to patients, visitors, physicians, volunteers, and other employees of the organization.
  • Assumes responsibility for assigned areas of laboratory activity.
  • Maintains proficiency and performs diagnostic tests in blood bank, hematology, serology, chemistry, coagulation, clinical microscopy, and bacteriology.
  • Carries out and initiates follow-up of organic and inorganic diagnostic tests.
  • Draws venous or capillary blood from inpatients and outpatients as required.
  • Packages specimens together with pertinent information and arranges for delivery to reference laboratory.
  • Prioritizes requests according to need and condition.
  • Records and checks results of tests, ensuring prompt transmittal of accurate reports and test results to physicians and nursing units.
  • Ensures proper reporting of charges and billing information for all services.
  • Completes periodic proficiency survey tests for unknown samples submitted for analysis and completes required reports.
  • Prepares and sets up equipment for tests, assures proper calibration of equipment.
  • Performs and records daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance checks of all laboratory equipment.
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the field of clinical laboratory procedures, techniques, and equipment.
  • Must wear facility-provided identification badge at all times.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

  • For MT, ASCP Eligible: Maintains proficiency and performs diagnostic tests in any laboratory area including blood bank, serology, coagulation, hematology, chemistry, clinical microscopy, and microbiology.
  • When assigned to a section, performs diagnostic tests in conformance with laboratory procedures and physician orders, initiates follow-up as necessary, and draws blood or receives specimens from patients.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient reports and distributes to authorized personnel.
  • Interacts with the public, patients, and other professionals in a discrete, polite, and professional manner.
  • Operates within established control parameters for all laboratory tests and ensures constant documentation and retention of all quality control data.
  • Practices efficient and economical use of laboratory supplies and reagents, ensuring adequate availability and communicating needs to supervisory personnel.
  • Assists in work performed by MLT, orientation of new personnel, training of students, and instruction to nontechnical personnel.
  • Maintains work area in a neat, clean, and orderly condition at all times.

Requirements

  • MLT, ASCP Eligible: Associate’s degree in science from an accredited institution and completion of an approved medical technician internship program. ASCP eligible. Computer skills preferred.
  • MT, ASCP Eligible: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Medical/Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Biology, Microbiology, or Chemistry from an accredited institution and completion of an approved Medical Technology internship program. ASCP or equivalent certification required within six months of hire. Computer skills preferred.

Schedule

64PP (32 Hours Per Week), Rotating evenings (3p-11p), may also cover 11p-7a, Rotating Weekends & Rotating Holidays.

Pay

Hourly pay range: $27.89 - $48.19
