About the Role

Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville, Tennessee is part of Covenant Health, East Tennessee’s largest nonprofit health system and a Becker’s “Top 150 Places to Work in Healthcare.” The Medical Laboratory Technician performs high complexity, routine, and specialized clinical lab tests for use in diagnosis and treatment of patients by physicians. This is a full-time, night shift position with 80 hours per pay period and a $3,000 sign-on bonus.

Responsibilities

• Perform high complexity, routine, and specialized clinical lab tests that the individual has been trained and found competent in performing.
• Follow the Laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results.
• Document all corrective actions taken when the test process deviates from the Laboratory’s established performance specifications; do not report patient results until corrective action has been taken and the test is performing as expected.
• Assist with proficiency-testing samples and maintain records demonstrating that proficiency-testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
• Adhere to the Laboratory’s quality control policies; document all control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
• Notify the Technical Specialist, Laboratory Manager, Shift Leader, Charge Tech, or Pathologist of out-of-control situations if the problem cannot be resolved.
• Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results; either correct the problem or notify the appropriate personnel if the problem cannot be resolved.
• Assist in orientation, instruction, and evaluation of students and new employees to the department.
• Prepare various reagents and supplies according to precise formulas as needed.
• Utilize the Laboratory Information System (LIS) in patient accessioning and resulting; monitor incomplete and collection lists.
• Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments, as specified.
• Check communication boards at least weekly.
• Plan work to ensure maximum productivity with minimal carry-over work while keeping overtime to a minimum.
• Communicate needed information about patient samples or instrument performance to the next shift and other appropriate staff.
• Act as a resource person for phlebotomy if trained appropriately, including outpatients.
• Maintain and disinfect work area.
• Assist with coverage of the pneumatic tube system, processing, and distributing specimens.
• Handle biohazard wastes according to policy.
• Assist in evaluation and validation of testing systems.
• Maintain strict confidentiality of all patient, co-worker, and business information at all times.
• Follow policies, procedures, and safety standards; complete required education assignments annually.
• Work toward achieving goals and objectives and participate in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Current Tennessee State License as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
• Certification by ASCP or NCA is preferred.

Pay

$3,000 sign-on bonus.

Schedule

Full time, 80 hours per pay period, night shift.
