About the Role

The Medical Laboratory Scientist Technical Specialist for Point of Care Testing (MLS TS), as defined by CLIA, performs waived and non-waived testing. Each individual performs tests authorized by the Laboratory Director, commensurate with their education, training, or experience. Under general supervision, the MLS TS carries out laboratory policies and performs tests according to standard operating procedures, ensuring accurate results and records. This role requires interpreting test results used in disease diagnosis and treatment.

The MLS TS is responsible for all Point of Care (POC) activities in inpatient and outpatient sites, serving as a subject-matter expert (SME) for POC testing. They collaborate with Nursing, Ambulatory Services, and other testing site leaders to manage system operations, instrument validations, IQCP creation, quality control, troubleshooting, training, competency assessments, inventory, proficiency testing, policy development, and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

• Recommend test methodologies and instrumentation appropriate for clinical use, including precision and accuracy.
• Collaborate with vendors on test performance characteristics.
• Ensure enrollment and participation in CMS-approved proficiency testing (PT) programs, adhering to CLIA requirements for PT sample testing, result submission, and review.
• Establish and maintain a quality control program, ensuring acceptable analytical performance throughout the testing process.
• Resolve technical problems and implement remedial actions for test system deviations.
• Ensure processes (e.g., QC lockouts, repeat criteria) prevent reporting patient results until corrective actions are taken.
• Develop training programs and competency assessment modules for testing personnel, ensuring assessments are completed at required intervals (semi-annually for the first year, annually thereafter for non-waived testing).
• Oversee instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, correlations, and documentation.
• Manage inventory, proficiency testing programs, and regulatory activities, including site compliance surveillance.
• Develop and revise policies and procedures in collaboration with testing location leadership.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a related field (required).
• Medical Technologist certification (ASCP) [MLT, MT, MLA, Histologists] from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) (required).
• 5-7 years of clinical laboratory experience, sufficient to serve as the CLIA Technical Consultant.

Skills

• Advanced knowledge of laboratory tests, procedures, and analytical skills to review findings and advise testing personnel.
• Ability to evaluate the accuracy of results with consistent attention to detail.
• Manual and visual dexterity to operate, adjust, and repair laboratory equipment.
• Advanced understanding of laboratory equipment, analytic techniques, and IQCPs.
• Ability to identify issues with tests, QC, analyzers, and samples that could impact results.
• Contribute to the review or development of new procedures and performance improvement projects.
• Ability to work independently, multitask, and evaluate situations in a fast-paced environment.
• Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and data compilation/analysis.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills to interact with staff, physicians, vendors, and patients.
• Supervisory and managerial abilities to direct POC operations and oversee staff.

Additional Details

This is an onsite role located at 243-245 Charles Street, with scheduled weekly hours of 20. The position is classified as regular, with a day shift.

Pay

The pay range for this role is $34.13 - $49.63 per hour (Grade 7). Compensation is determined based on skills, relevant experience, education, certifications, and other factors.
