Mine Waste Lead Geotechnical Engineer

WSP is seeking a Lead Civil/Geotechnical Engineer to join our US Mine Waste team in Tucson, AZ. Tempe, AZ; Reno, NV; or Elko, NV will also be considered.

About the role

You will work as part of a regional team on challenging mining, heavy civil, and geotechnical projects, contributing to our Mine Waste Team and helping meet client objectives and solve their challenges.

Responsibilities

Lead the civil design of mine waste containment (tailings and waste rock) and heap leach facilities, including initial layout and design, site selection, geotechnical and hydrologic analyses, and preparation of design drawings and technical specifications for construction.
Manage and execute a wide variety of mine waste geotechnical engineering projects, including geotechnical field investigations, laboratory testing programs, data interpretation, and geotechnical analysis.
Scope, direct, and review complex geotechnical analyses focusing on soil mechanics, including stability, seepage, thermal modeling, deposition modeling, and run-out analyses for mine waste or water embankment dams and waste rock spoils.
Independently manage projects according to client-approved scopes of work, delivering high-quality reports on time and within budget, subject to senior review and oversight.
Contribute to client relationship and business development activities to build and grow the business.
Work with and lead multi-disciplinary project teams.
Support technical proposals and design work packages in response to client needs.
Manage the work of junior engineers.
Remain current with the latest geotechnical engineering techniques and practices.
Collaborate with other engineers and planners on projects with infrastructure authorities at Federal, State, regional, and local levels.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
7 to 10 years of relevant post-education experience in engineering and geotechnical design.
Engineer license required.
Demonstrated experience working on projects related to tailings management and heap leach facility design in the mining industry.
Experience with commonly used software packages.
Sound knowledge in soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering.
Demonstrated client liaison and business development skills.
Project management experience with small to mid-level projects, including scoping and tracking hours and expenses.
Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with engineering and non-engineering audiences.
High-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic work environment.
Ability to work independently with minimal oversight and provide guidance to junior team members with strict adherence to QA/QC.
Highly proficient with technical writing, office automation, discipline-specific design software (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS), technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge and reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, computations, and statistical analysis.
Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and assertively directing subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific needs.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering or a closely related field.
Willingness to work on projects across business sectors, performing a variety of tasks, sometimes on short notice.
Enthusiasm for field work and travel (local and national) as needed for project requirements.
