Military & Veterans careers

We are seeking active duty service members, veterans, and members of the National Guard and Reserves for State Trooper positions. Applicants with honorable military service will be given veterans' preference as part of Maryland’s commitment to connecting veterans with available services and programs.

Military Benefits & Retirement Credit

• Active Duty Military: Up to 5 years of active duty service is credited at the ten-year mark towards retirement for State Trooper positions.
• Reserves and/or National Guard: Four months is credited toward MSP Retirement at the ten-year mark for every satisfactory year in the Reserves or National Guard. Note: This does not apply if you are already retired from the military.

GI Bill® Educational Benefits

The Maryland State Police offers eligible military personnel, veterans, and their dependents the ability to utilize their GI Bill® Educational Benefits throughout the Maryland State Police Academy, field training, and the 16-month probationary period. Military personnel are encouraged to visit the Veterans' Benefit Administration for further information.

Military & Veteran Liaisons

Each Maryland State Government department and agency designates a Veterans Services Specialist (VSS) or liaison to provide veteran-related information to State employees who have served in the military or have military family members.

• Maryland State Police Military Liaison: Supports deploying members of the MSP family serving in the National Guard and Reserves and serves as the main point of contact for interagency employees and supervisors on military service matters.
