Military & Family Life Counselor - Embedded
About the Role
Provides the full breadth of Military & Family Life Counselor (MFLC) consultation and counseling services to the command structure, military service members, and their families as an embedded counselor assigned to a dedicated military unit. Responsible for delivering non-medical, short-term, solution-focused counseling, training, health and wellness presentations, and consultation to the assigned brigade/regiment's command regarding behavioral health issues with a deep understanding of the military unit, culture, and mission.
Works closely with the Regional Supervisor/Regional Director, installation, and military branch Points of Contact (POC) to ensure the program is provided within scope and meets the installation's needs.
Responsibilities
- Provide non-medical, short-term, walk-around counseling directly to eligible service and family members at assigned primary and secondary locations of a dedicated military unit (brigade, wing, or regiment) as an embedded counselor.
- Services include assessment, brief counseling and consultation, action planning, referral to resources (ensuring linkage as appropriate), and follow-up as indicated.
- Deliver training and health and wellness presentations and activities as requested or directed.
- When assigned, Tier 4 counselors will provide clinical supervision to Tier 1 counselors as outlined by the licensing board in the state of practice.
- Enter counselor activity data daily through a smartphone or web application to ensure accurate reporting while maintaining client/service member confidentiality.
- Cultivate and maintain direct relationships with commanders and personnel within the assigned military unit, utilizing relationship management skills and recognizing the unit’s unique structure and mission.
- Develop an effective and professional working relationship with the installation POC, command, and command POC.
- Maintain visibility within the brigade/regiment to ensure MFLC services are accessible.
- Establish and maintain working relationships with community resources and military populations.
- Partner with POC to provide MFLC services in a manner that addresses the needs of the brigade/regiment while maintaining confidentiality.
- Provide MFLC response to critical incidents, surge, and special requests as directed by the POC and approved by the Office of Secretary of Defense (OSD) program manager. Flex schedule to respond to urgent requests as needed.
- Manage duty to warn and restricted reporting situations according to Department of Defense (DoD) protocol and staff cases with the Regional Supervisor/Regional Director.
- Communicate with Regional Supervisors and participate in regular individual and group supervision, sharing information regarding trends and issues on assigned installations.
- Participate in regular in-services/training, Quality Improvement committees, or other contract activities as assigned.
- Participate in initiatives, studies, and pilot programs as directed by the customer and/or Magellan, including certification and training processes, activity documentation, and integration of pilot activities into non-medical counseling work.
- All other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Master’s Degree from an accredited Graduate Program in a Mental Health-related field.
- Valid unrestricted independent counseling license from a State, District of Columbia, US Territory, or Commonwealth that grants authority to provide counseling services as an independent practitioner.
- A minimum of five years of post-licensure clinical experience.
- Demonstrate intermediate-level competencies in technology and software (e.g., Microsoft Suite, Internet navigation, Smartphone/Tablet and application navigation, video-conferencing platform navigation).
- Ability to engage and communicate with military members or children as assigned, and respond quickly to emergent situations in any physical location on a military installation and/or within a school setting.
- Ability to traverse short and/or long distances within the base to both indoor and outdoor locations, including rugged or uneven terrain (e.g., steep inclines, stairs, grass), and work in outdoor weather conditions.
- May require travel to locations outside of a military installation in a variety of physical environments.
- Compliance with site-specific requirements to work at designated locations, such as immunizations or vaccinations, and provide records of receipt.
- Proof of US Citizenship and fluent English proficiency.
- Understanding, sensitivity, and empathy for service members and their families.
- Ability to develop trusting, helping relationships and work effectively with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Pass a National Agency Check and Inquiries (NACI) Clearance, Installation Records Check (IRC), Criminal History Background Check, and FBI Fingerprints Check.
- Some units require a secret-level clearance in addition to the above requirements.
- Valid U.S. state vehicle operator’s license. May be required to pass tests and obtain a U.S. military vehicle operator’s permit for commercial sedans or similar for use at Temporary Duty (TDY) locations.
Pay
Salary Minimum: $59,922
Salary Maximum: $100,280
This information reflects the anticipated base salary range based on current national data. Minimums and maximums may vary by location. Actual pay will be adjusted based on skills, experience, education, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position may also be eligible for short-term incentives.
