  • Pay Range: $62,309 - $130,469 Annually (District Induction Program provided for teachers with preliminary credentials)

Resource Specialist Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides an educational program for students identified by the School Appraisal Team (S.A.T.) as having exceptional needs, who are assigned to regular classroom teachers for a majority of the school day
  • Confers frequently with parents and professional staff members on each pupil's progress
  • Responsible for the diagnosis and remediation of students with learning disorders, including the development and implementation of an Individualized Educational Plan (I.E.P.)
  • Maintains assigned caseload not exceeding 24 pupils at any given period
  • Provides supervision of an instructional aide
  • Responsible to the Director of Pupil Personnel Services and the local supervision of the site administrator
  • Coordinates and chairs all School Appraisal Team (S.A.T.) functions (referrals, assessments, placements, and other related duties)
  • Responsible for the identification of students with special needs, and the development and implementation of an individualized educational plan for all students admitted to the resource specialist program
  • Responsible for referring to the Educational Assessment Services all students not making adequate progress in the resource specialist program
  • Responsible for supervising at least one full time resource specialist aide
  • Responsible for developing appropriate behavioral management strategies
  • Responsible for administering appropriate assessment tools for identifying, placing, and evaluating students referred to SAT
  • Provides appropriate materials and media for regular classroom instruction as needed
  • Responsible for providing appropriate instructions or resources (one-to-one, small group, regular classroom) as prescribed in the I.E.P.
  • Develops weekly lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the basic instructional philosophy and curriculum of the District
  • Provides students with the opportunity to partake in daily patriotic observance (Education Code 52720)
  • Monitors classroom environment ensuring that clean and safe conditions exist, notifying principal of any unclean or unsafe classroom conditions
  • Monitors classroom activities making students responsible for putting materials, supplies, tools, etc., safely and neatly away at the end of class session

Learning Handicapped/Special Day Class Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides an educational program for pupils who demonstrate a significant discrepancy between their academic potential and their classroom performance, where the learning disability is related to an identified neurological or perceptual disorder that prohibits satisfactory progress in the regular classroom
  • Teaches learning handicapped pupils in a special day class the basic learning skills and other subject matter commensurate with the emotional, physical, and intellectual needs of the pupil
  • Provides individualized and small group instruction that parallels regular classroom curriculum with emphasis on remedial reading instruction
  • Provides individualized and small group counseling on educational and personal problems relating to the pupil's total growth and development
  • Confers frequently with parents and professional staff members on each pupil's progress
  • Assists other professional staff members in the diagnosis of learning disorders, development of planned remediation, and evaluation of pupil's progress
  • Provides appropriate physical and psychological environment to establish and reinforce acceptable pupil behavior, attitudes, social skills, and self-image
  • Arranges with staff for integration of pupils into regular classes for instruction in areas where pupils can meet with success
  • Serves as member of the School Appraisal Team (S.A.T.) or the District Educational Assessment Team (E.A.S.)
  • Provides continual supervision on an "on-call" basis for pupils assigned to his group as problem situations arise elsewhere in the schools
  • Performs all other functions performed by regular classroom teachers

Qualifications

Education and Credential:

  • Valid California teaching credential: Education Specialist Instruction (Mild/Moderate or Mild/Moderate Support Needs) OR Proof of University Intern Eligibility: Education Specialist Instruction (Mild/Moderate or Mild/Moderate Support Needs)
  • Valid RSP Certificate (necessary with Learning Handicapped credential only)
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders Added Authorization (AAAS)
  • English Learner Authorization
  • Bachelor's Degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements (for Learning Handicapped/Special Day Class)
  • Course work in the psychological characteristics of exceptional and remedial children (for Learning Handicapped/Special Day Class)

Experience:

  • Three or more years full time teaching experience (for Resource Specialist)
  • Two years of successful classroom teaching in the district is normally required before assignment to Learning Handicapped/Special Day Class position
  • Extensive experience in working with learning handicapped pupils and/or in remedial teaching techniques, re-teaching of reading, or reading center programs is desirable
  • Clinical experience with the emotionally disturbed is desirable

Skills and Abilities:

  • Completed or enrolled in an advanced preparation program in special education
  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills which facilitate joint problem solving and stimulate sharing of skills and resources
  • Demonstrates skills in effective communication with parents and staff
  • Demonstrates skills in dealing with conflicts
  • Demonstrates knowledge of due process procedures and their implementation
  • Ability to recognize the need for student services beyond the scope of the Resource Specialist program
  • Appearance, grooming and personality that establish a desirable example for pupils
  • Ability to meet District standards for physical and mental health
  • Empathy for pupils with severe learning problems (academic and emotional) and the ability to gain job satisfaction from observing small steps of growth
  • Ability to relate to students, parents, medical and psychological advisors, school administrators, and other classroom teachers
