About the role

The voting for the 2025 AACR Annual Election is now open, where members will vote for the next President-Elect, Treasurer, five Board Members, and four members of the Nominating Committee. This year, Mikala Egeblad, PhD is a candidate for the Board of Directors of AACR.

Responsibilities

  • Conference cochair for the AACR Special Conference on Tumor Body Interactions in 2024.
  • Delivered a keynote address at the AACR Special Conference on Cancer Metastasis in 2022.
  • Served as a member of the AACR Princess Takamatsu Memorial Lectureship Committee (2022-2024).
  • Served as a member of the Aging and Cancer Task Force (2021-present).
  • Served on The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research Science of the Patient Grants Scientific Review Committee.
  • Contributed to the AACR Annual Meeting Education Committee in multiple terms.
  • Served as chair-elect (2020-2023) and later as chair (2022-2024) of the Tumor Microenvironment Working Group Steering Committee.

Requirements

Mikala Egeblad, PhD, is an Associate Director at the Giovanis Institute for Translational Cell Biology and a co-leader of the Cancer Invasion and Metastasis Program at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center. She is also a professor of Cell Biology and Oncology, as well as the Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Tumor Microenvironment at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Additionally, Dr. Egeblad serves as an adjunct professor at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

Qualifications

  • BS in Medicine (1993)
  • MSc in Human Biology (1996)
  • PhD in Health Sciences from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark (1996)
  • Postdoctoral training as a fellow in the Department of Anatomy at the University of California, San Francisco, from 2001 to 2006

Skills

  • Advanced intravital microscopy in living mice
  • Research on tumor microenvironment and its role in cancer progression, particularly metastasis
  • Investigates the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) and their contribution to cancer metastasis
  • Reprogramming or inhibiting neutrophils and macrophages to enhance cancer therapies and suppress metastatic spread
