Midwife - Nurse Midwifery - Mount Sinai OB/GYN Practice - Per Diem Days

Per diem role responsible for primary care and management of patient health, including obstetric and gynecological care for both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies within established practice guidelines. Supports excellence in clinical practice and patient care while maintaining the mission, philosophy, and standards of Maternal Child Health Services and the Medical Center.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate prenatal care in the ambulatory setting, including:
    • Taking pertinent history and performing physical & pelvic examinations
    • Obtaining laboratory and diagnostic tests
    • Providing counseling and teaching
    • Identifying risk factors and developing management plans
  • Manage care of selected inpatients based on unit protocols in collaboration with the attending physician
  • Obtain physician consultation for medical or obstetrical complications not covered by departmental protocols
  • Provide intra-partum care, including:
    • Evaluating labor status and admitting patients to the labor floor
    • Performing admission physical examinations and venipuncture/intravenous infusions
    • Obtaining and evaluating laboratory/diagnostic tests
    • Evaluating labor progress through vaginal examination
    • Making decisions regarding patient ambulation, positioning, and delivery location
    • Applying and interpreting fetal monitoring (external/internal)
    • Consulting with physicians for abnormal fetal monitor tracings
    • Performing deliveries, episiotomies, and repairs of minor lacerations
    • Managing the third stage of labor and newborn appraisal/examination
    • Signing birth certificates for uncomplicated deliveries
  • Coordinate patient care in triage and participate in L&D board rounds
  • Provide labor and delivery care in consultation with attending physicians, including:
    • Performing prostaglandin insertions, managing oxytocin inductions, and monitoring amnio infusions
    • Conducting deliveries for patients approved for vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC)
    • Repairing cervical/extended vaginal lacerations (with supervision for third/fourth degree)
    • First assisting on C-sections and bilateral tubal ligations (BTL)
    • Inserting Foley catheter bulbs and misoprostol for labor induction
    • Ordering hemorrhage treatment drugs and performing manual placenta removal/uterine exploration
  • Provide postpartum care, including:
    • Daily rounds, examinations, and ordering/interpreting tests
    • Postpartum teaching, counseling, and discharge planning
    • Managing cesarean section and BTL patients per unit protocols
    • Writing medication/non-medication orders and removing sutures/staples
    • Performing fever work-ups and obtaining physician consultation for complications
    • Obtaining informed consent for infant circumcision

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in nursing (preferred)
  • Completion of a Pharmacology course with authorization to issue prescriptions (NYS Education Law Section 6951(2))
  • Clinical experience in obstetrics and care of women/children

Qualifications

  • Licensed Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) – NYS DOH/Office of Professions
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification – American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification

Pay

$96.4176 hourly
