Middle School Special Education Teachers (ELA)

About the role

The Teacher-Special Education position at our schools provides instruction for students with disabilities that supports learning and results in decreased behavior and increased student achievement. This role also involves developing, implementing, monitoring, and reviewing special education required documents, addressing unique student needs, and following due process procedures.

Responsibilities

• Develops, implements, monitors, and reviews Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs), Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), Reevaluation Data Reviews (RDRs), and Re-Eligibility Reports for each student on the caseload.
• Addresses the unique needs of students in the caseload, including those with moderate intellectual disability, orthopedic impairment, severe and profound disability, or who are deaf/hard of hearing.
• Fulfills classroom teaching duties and other related tasks as assigned by the Principal or designee.
• Keeps current on educational research, trends, and practices through professional development.
• Communicates, collaborates, and cooperates with colleagues, supervisors, and students.
• Communicates regularly with parents/caretakers about student progress on Georgia Standards, IEP goals, and special education processes.
• Maintains standards of student behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere in alignment with the local school PBIS protocol.
• Provides small group and specially designed instruction to adapt or modify the curriculum to meet the needs of each student.
• Monitors students' progress in learning through various culturally-responsive techniques and maintains records for report cards, IEP progress reports, IEP meetings, and parent conferences.
• Provides lesson plans for daily and long-term substitute teachers and paraprofessionals.
• Supports the district and local school vision, mission, and goals.
• Evaluates, selects, and modifies culturally-responsive resources and activities to match learners' needs and meet the curriculum standards.
• Prepares adequately for responsibilities to be assumed when absent.
• Participates in professional learning to increase skills and proficiency related to job responsibilities.
• Utilizes technology and assistive technology effectively to plan, teach, and assess.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in applicable field of education from a Professional Standards Commission (PSC)-approved college or university.
• A valid in-field and content teaching certificate.
• Previous teaching experience preferred.
