Middle School Physical Education/Health Teacher

Dr. Richard Izquierdo Health & Science Charter School is seeking a certified, or on-the-pathway-to-certification, Physical Education and Health teacher to provide instruction to middle school students. This role operates under the general supervision of the Middle School Principal, collaborating with other teachers within the department and across content areas.

Responsibilities

• Content Knowledge and Planning
  • Exhibit understanding and skills relevant to Physical Education and Health.
  • Make topics and activities meaningful and relevant to each student.
  • Integrate technology resources compatible with students’ needs and abilities.
  • Develop clear, logical, and sequential lesson plans.
  • Plan with specialists to differentiate instruction for all students.
• Instructional Strategies
  • Link present content/skills with past and future learning experiences.
  • Use varied instructional strategies (e.g., modeling, cooperative learning, collaboration) to differentiate learning.
  • Use effective questioning strategies to engage students and promote learning.
  • Monitor student understanding and adjust teaching as needed.
  • Maximize participation and success for all learners.
  • Explain content and demonstrate skills in multiple ways to meet diverse needs.
  • Hold each student individually responsible for learning.
• Assessment
  • Use assessment results to monitor and modify instruction.
  • Use teacher-made and standardized tests to measure performance.
  • Employ oral, non-verbal, and written forms of assessment.
  • Maintain and use records of student progress for instructional decisions.
  • Continuously monitor progress and provide meaningful feedback.
  • Demonstrate competence in grading, ranking, and reporting practices.
• Student Communication and Rapport
  • Use precise language and clear oral/written communication.
  • Articulate clear learning goals and instructional procedures.
  • Model caring, fairness, courtesy, respect, and active listening.
  • Demonstrate concern for students’ emotional and physical well-being.
  • Seek and maintain positive interactions with students.
  • Gather information about student interests and opinions.
• Classroom Management
  • Enforce school behavior policies while fostering classroom community.
  • Communicate clear behavior expectations to students and parents.
  • Actively monitor behavior and provide constructive feedback.
  • Create a physical setting and routines that promote learning and minimize disruption.
  • Manage transitions efficiently and constructively.
  • Handle emergency situations as they arise.
• Professional Demeanor and Development
  • Work cooperatively with co-teachers and colleagues for student benefit.
  • Maintain a professional appearance per school dress code.
  • Interact ethically and professionally with colleagues and students.
  • Carry out duties in accordance with policies and regulations.
  • Use appropriate channels for resolving concerns and maintain confidentiality.
  • Complete classroom and school responsibilities in a timely manner.
  • Participate in professional growth activities (conferences, workshops, coursework).

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred.
• NYS certification in Physical Education preferred.
• At least 2 years of prior middle school teaching experience preferred.
• Demonstrated success in non-traditional and/or urban school settings.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Experience with educational technology.

Schedule

This is a full-time, 10-month, on-site position with no hybrid or remote options. Regular hours are Monday through Friday, 7:55 AM to 3:55 PM, plus attendance at special events as required.

Pay

$75,000 - $105,000 annually, based on experience.
