About the role

Hmong College Prep Academy (HCPA) is a Title I Charter School serving students through a school-wide plan focused on the needs of at-risk students. The Middle School ELL Teacher instructs English language learners and supports learning in assigned grade level(s). This role creates a flexible classroom environment favorable to learning, instructs students in all language domains (speaking, listening, writing, and reading), and helps make grade-level and academic content comprehensible. Through various instructional models, the ELL Teacher motivates students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge for a solid foundation in further education.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction in core curriculum areas; make appropriate use of instructional resources and technologies.
  • Support Minnesota Graduation and Common Core Standards; implement District and school goals and objectives.
  • Evaluate student performance using school and District systems; promote student achievement; maintain required student records and reports.
  • Perform classroom management duties; enforce rules governing student conduct; take disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Provide differentiated instructional methods and content to ensure student mastery of content.
  • Use data (screening, diagnostic, progress monitoring, daily work samples) to adjust instruction, practice, and feedback based on students’ strengths and growth areas.
  • Promote a welcoming, respectful, and academically challenging learning environment.
  • Maintain accurate records (grades, assessments, lesson plans) via HCPA’s Learning Management Systems (Schoology and Seesaw) and/or PowerSchool.
  • Ensure all online class resources are current via Schoology and/or Seesaw.
  • Connect with families via phone calls, emails, conferences, and school events.
  • Foster a social environment with students to develop trust, respect, friendships, and self-discovery.
  • Participate in professional development meetings and professional learning communities; provide student work when requested.
  • Implement new learning in the classroom following professional development.
  • Develop and work on new learning based on self-assessment, input from teacher leaders, and the Director of Teaching and Learning.
  • Continuously seek opportunities for professional growth.
  • Supervise student activities, including:
    • Bus duty – assist with walking students to buses at the end of the day.
    • Breakfast and/or lunch duty – assist with monitoring on a rotational schedule.
  • Adhere to the MN Teachers Code of Conduct.
  • Support school goals and objectives consistent with HCPA’s vision, mission, and values.
  • Participate in creating a culture of excellence, teamwork, and collaboration among staff, students, and families.
  • Establish and maintain effective, cooperative relationships with students, parents, teachers, and other school staff.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to parent, student, and staff needs.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding students and the educational setting.

Engagement Activities

  • Volunteer activities: 3 HCPA volunteer activities are required, taking place outside the traditional school day (e.g., open houses, school dances, prom, concerts).
  • Required activities:
    • Grade Level Parent Meetings.
    • Fall and Spring Parent/Teacher Conferences.
    • HCPA Graduation.
  • Miscellaneous Committees: Additional opportunities to engage with the community and expand skills are highly encouraged.

Requirements

  • Required Qualifications:
    • Current MN teaching license in English as a Second Language for grades 6-12.
    • BA or MA in ESL Education or other educational field; equivalent experience may be considered.
    • Strong skills in classroom presentation and management.
    • Knowledge of instructional technologies and research/trends in teaching and student learning.
    • Ability to utilize computer and multimedia technology.
    • Knowledge of core curriculum areas, with a strong preference for candidates trained in LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) or experienced in structured literacy and systematic, explicit instruction based on the science of reading (phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing, language comprehension).
    • Knowledge of teaching and learning strategies to meet diverse student needs.
    • Knowledge of multicultural, gender, and disability-fair curriculum concepts.
    • Ability to adapt instructional routines, activities, and scaffolding for diverse student populations.
    • Ability to implement classroom activities fostering problem-solving and critical thinking.
    • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on District and school goals.
    • Ability to evaluate student performance and present evaluations to foster higher achievement.
    • Commitment to continuous professional growth and goal-setting.
    • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with students, parents, staff, and community members from diverse backgrounds.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to multi-task.
    • Knowledge of school programs, functions, and procedures.
    • Ability to remain calm in emergencies and stressful situations.
    • Ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment within established guidelines.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience working with children of diverse ethnic backgrounds in an urban school setting.
    • 3+ years of teaching experience.
    • Experience with the WIDA English Language Development (ELD) standards.
    • Experience administering the WIDA ACCESS test.

Other Information

  • Unofficial transcripts are accepted at the time of hire; official transcripts must be submitted within 30 days of the start date.
  • Formal credential evaluation is required for post-secondary education completed outside the United States.

Work Environment/Conditions

  • Duties are performed in a school/classroom environment; the school building is multi-level with elevator access.
  • Extensive interaction with children of all ages.
  • Possible exposure to loud and noisy locations (e.g., classrooms, cafeterias).
  • Operate standard equipment (computer, fax, telephone, copier).
  • Fast-paced environment requiring frequent keyboarding, repetitive motion, and rapid eye movements.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods, push, reach, or bend.
  • Work may require weekend/evening hours and occasional travel.
  • Duties may occasionally be performed:
    • On field trips away from school.
    • In outdoor environments (athletic fields, playgrounds).
    • In varying weather conditions.
