About the Role
Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is seeking an Engineering Design Manager/Part Leader to lead our diverse and growing Engineering Design Structures Team in developing a vision, strategy, and business plan to meet internal and external customer objectives related to Structures and Testing.
Responsibilities
- Develop project work plans and budgets in support of the Structures Engineering Design Team (SED) vision.
- Set goals and objectives for all direct reports and assign tasks/projects to support the team’s work plan.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in Automotive Body Structures design (e.g., Roof, Side Aperture, Cowl, FEM, Bumper Beam, Fender), development, and testing.
- Ensure the Vehicle Development process is followed from concept to post-production, meeting all internal and external customer requirements.
- Conduct competitive benchmarking, detailed engineering cost/weight analysis, drawing release, engineering orders, and meet safety/regulatory targets.
- Manage and direct engineers in daily activities supporting Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis brands.
- Lead new technology development, including technical roadmaps and strategies for production vehicle implementation.
- Support plant and lifecycle activities, including quality improvement, continuous vehicle improvement, cost, and mass reductions.
- Review progress against work plans and quality of work, providing technical direction and guidance.
- Maintain and update project status reports, reviewing them routinely with upper management.
- Create bi-weekly team reports summarizing past and upcoming activities.
- Develop and present technical reports for management, affiliates, and other stakeholders.
- Interface and collaborate with other teams within VE, HATCI, and affiliates (e.g., Project Management, Product Planning, Materials Development, Safety Integration, Regulation & Certification, Sales and Marketing, Manufacturing).
- Provide support for testing, development, and vehicle clinics as required.
- Oversee administrative functions such as timecards, vacation requests, and travel requests.
- Perform additional projects as assigned.
- Travel up to 20% of the time domestically and internationally.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (minimum); MBA or Master’s degree preferred.
- 8–12 years of experience in automotive vehicle design and development with increasing project and team management responsibilities.
- 3+ years managing a multi-functional engineering department.
- Expertise in vehicle design and solving development/quality issues (e.g., warranty, IQS, plant issues, field issues, root cause analysis).
- Significant experience in automotive structures, closures, and CAE.
- Experience supporting suppliers and assembly plants during significant program events.
Skills
- Expert oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in CATIA, CAE, or similar systems.
- Expert project management skills with flexibility for program and process changes.
- Advanced skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Strong time management, organization, presentation, and self-management skills.
