Mid - Level Electrical Engineer
About the role
SMC is seeking a Mid-Level Electrical Engineer to execute electrical design for mission critical projects. Typical project types include design of greenfield and brownfield data center facilities, fit-out packages for hyperscale and enterprise clients of colocation providers, data center campus planning, conceptual designs, feasibility studies, and power systems studies such as Neher-McGrath, short circuit, coordination, and arc flash.
This candidate will independently execute basic electrical design projects, from established design criteria through generation of design plans and specifications for permitting and construction. They will also contribute as part of a larger electrical design team on complex mission critical projects under senior engineer guidance. The role involves interfacing with internal and external design leads (mechanical, telecommunications, fire protection, plumbing, architectural, civil, structural) and mentoring junior engineers and designers.
Responsibilities
- Design electrical infrastructure for mission critical buildings and campuses, including medium voltage distribution, highly redundant power systems (distributed and block redundant topologies), on-site generation and UPS backup, small power, lighting, grounding, and fire alarm.
- Coordinate with internal and external disciplines for required electrical power connections.
- Coordinate monitoring system interfaces for electrical equipment with controls and telecommunications engineers.
- Understand and apply electrical power monitoring systems (EPMS) basics.
- Review and apply client standards, design criteria, applicable standards, and best practices to design projects.
- Understand local and national construction codes and project specifications.
- Produce detailed design documents using Autodesk Revit daily.
- Use Microsoft tools (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams) for project tasks.
- Meet project deadlines, including working necessary hours to complete major deliverables.
- Travel to project sites as required (approximately 10-20% travel).
- Communicate clearly in written and spoken forms with co-workers and clients.
- Lead junior engineers, designers, and modelers, coordinating small project teams to deliver specific design elements.
- Mentor and train junior engineers, designers, and modelers to develop electrical design knowledge.
- Maintain excellent organizational skills to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Requirements
- 4-year degree in electrical engineering or architectural engineering with an electrical focus preferred. 2-year degrees and EET degrees with relevant work experience will be considered.
- Minimum 4 years of experience in facility electrical design, particularly using Autodesk Revit for drawing development.
- Experience in electrical design for larger industrial and commercial buildings is preferred; mission critical design experience is a plus.
- Experience performing and reviewing power studies (Neher-McGrath, short circuit, coordination, arc flash) is preferred.
- Experience across the entire construction process: schematic design through construction administration, including submittals, shop drawings, existing condition surveys, site observations, and punch lists.
- Experience leading small electrical design teams and client interface is preferred.
- Experience with construction management tools such as Procore and Autodesk Construction Cloud.
- Basic understanding of power monitoring systems for electrical systems is a plus.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) preferred.

Pay
Base compensation: $90,000–$225,000 (varies based on education, experience, skills, and location).
