Michael McConnell Peace with Justice Fellow

AFSC Chicago Peacebuilding is hiring a Michael McConnell Peace and Justice Youth Fellow to support local programs. The fellow will focus on developing youth participation in AFSC programming and working on city-wide campaigns to divest from policing and incarceration while promoting investments in community-based resources for safety.

About the role

This is an entry-level fellowship position offering training and support. The fellow will work closely with the AFSC Chicago Peacebuilding Program Director on issues including the abolition of police and prisons. Additional responsibilities may include research, communications support, and creating political education materials on defunding policing and militarism.

Responsibilities

• Provide support with ongoing program work.
• Attend weekly coalition meetings as AFSC Chicago Peacebuilding’s representative, acting as timekeeper and notetaker.
• Create educational resources, including an anti-militaristic youth curriculum for high school students.
• Collaborate with other AFSC programs by attending bi-weekly CSBP meetings and taking notes.
• Develop and publish the Chicago Peacebuilding Newsletter using EveryAction.
• Support the Chicago Peacebuilding team with monthly fundraising t-shirt sales and shipments.
• Provide administrative support for local and national AFSC projects as needed.
• Assist in executing strategy and content for Chicago Peacebuilding social media sites.
• Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
• Operate safely in all conditions and follow policies and procedures.
• Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
• Minimum one year of experience in community organizing, social justice campaigns, or youth leadership programs.
• Additional experience in strategizing for abolitionist campaigns preferred.
• Ability to work evenings and/or weekends and travel as needed.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment.
• Proficiency with standard Microsoft Office and related technology.
• Capability to work under tight time constraints in a high-volume environment with multiple priorities.
• Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse staff.

Pay

Non-Exempt (Hourly) position with a minimum hourly rate of $29.67.

Schedule

Part-time, 21 hours per week. Specific term of 1 year, with in-office work required 2–3 days per week in Chicago, IL.
