About the role

The Department Manager is responsible for unit operations, ensuring associate engagement, physician alignment, and patient satisfaction. This role delivers safe, quality care according to current evidence-based standards of practice, promotes shared decision-making, and manages unit resources including staff scheduling and provision of necessary equipment and supplies. The manager is accountable for nursing-sensitive indicators, core measures, and other identified outcome measures on the unit.

Responsibilities

  • Empower associates through delegation of clear responsibility, authority, and accountability.
  • Oversee recruitment, selection, and retention of personnel.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital, state, federal, and accreditation regulations related to patient care and the physical environment.
  • Communicate shared vision, mission, and values to motivate achievement of strategic goals.
  • Manage staffing, scheduling, and appropriate utilization of personnel.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and maintain accountability for the budget in the defined area of responsibility.
  • Oversee outcomes such as nursing-sensitive indicators, core measures, HCAPS, patient satisfaction, and associate satisfaction.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate action plans for continuous performance improvement.
  • Provide a safe environment through best practices for patients, families, and caregivers.
  • Create a learning environment that promotes evidence-based practice.
  • Ensure appropriate orientation, education, credentialing, and professional development of associates.
  • Monitor associate performance, providing coaching, recognition, counseling, and avenues for improvement.
  • Maintain professional relationships with healthcare team members, patients, and families.
  • Ensure a safe work environment that minimizes work-related illness and injury.

Requirements

  • Current State of Michigan RN Licensure.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Professional certification appropriate to practice (preferred).
  • Minimum of 2 years of nursing lead, charge, or leadership experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience.
  • Associate’s degree in nursing; Bachelor’s in nursing required within 3 years of hire into the classification.
  • Master’s degree in nursing (preferred).
