MFLC Counselor: Short Term or As Needed Coverage - San Angelo, TX

Military and Family Life Counselors (MFLCs) are the first line of defense for our Service Members’ mental well-being, providing flexible, ready-to-serve support across military installations and communities.

About the Role

Mission Ready Reserve (MRR) MFLCs are trained and available counselors ready to serve when called upon. This role allows you to focus on your passion for helping others, unencumbered by administrative burdens. Assignments are at the discretion of the counselor and may include supporting adults or minors in various settings such as military units, families, or schools.

The current need includes:

• Adult Positions: Provide counseling, consultation, and outreach to eligible Service Members and adult family members. Services are adjunct to the formal military behavioral and physical health treatment system, focusing on enhancing operational readiness and family resiliency. Issues addressed include relationships, stress management, parenting, frequent relocations, deployments, financial challenges, and job stress.
• Child And Youth Behavioral (CYB) Positions: Support eligible children, youth, parents, staff, and faculty through counseling, consultation, and outreach. CYB-MFLCs may observe and engage in activities with children, provide coaching to staff and parents, and model behavior management techniques. Services address issues such as identifying feelings, bullying, conflict resolution, self-esteem, anger management, separation from parents, coping with deployment, transition, and sibling/parental relationships.

Responsibilities

• Provide face-to-face counseling to military Service Members and their families (individual, couples, family, and children).
• Recommend appropriate referrals and handoffs to military and community resources based on clinical assessment.
• Offer presentations on social skills development and social-emotional learning, particularly for early childhood development.
• Build rapport with Service Members, spouses, and children by attending installation and community events.
• Assist families and children with challenges unique to the military community, including transitions, frequent moves, separations, deployments, and more.

Work Environment

Duties are performed in multiple indoor (60%) and outdoor (40%) locations as directed by the Department of War (DoW). Indoor settings may include military installations, schools, or Child Development Centers (CDCs). Outdoor locations may involve uneven terrain, stairs, and exposure to weather. CDC settings may require sitting on the floor to interact with children for up to 2 hours at a time. Environments vary by assignment.

Requirements

• A master’s degree or higher in the Behavioral Health Professions (MS/MSW/MA/PhD).
• Licensure to practice at the independent practice level (LCSW, MFT, LPCC, Psychologist) in a U.S. state or territory.
• U.S. citizenship.
• Ability to pass a basic background check for employment and obtain a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) or Child National Agency Check with Inquiries (CNACI) clearance, commonly called a Public Trust clearance.

Pay

Pay Range: $37/hr. - $44/hr.
