About the Role

Military and Family Life Counselors (MFLCs) provide first-line mental health support to military Service Members and their families without the administrative burdens of insurance, treatment plans, or overhead. As a Mission Ready Reserve (MRR) MFLC, you’ll work on a flexible PRN-type schedule, stepping in where needed across military installations and communities to deliver preventative, solution-focused counseling. Assignments may include embedded roles with military units, support for military families, or work within school settings.

The Mission Ready Reserve (MRR) model allows you to focus solely on counseling and supporting Service Members and their families, with no insurance filing, progress notes, or treatment plans required. Intuitive reporting tools are provided to streamline documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide face-to-face counseling to military Service Members and their families (individual, couples, family, and children).
  • Recommend appropriate referrals and handoffs to military and community resources based on clinical assessment.
  • Deliver presentations on social skills development and social-emotional learning, particularly for early childhood development.
  • Build rapport with Service Members, spouses, and children by participating in installation and community events.
  • Assist families and children with challenges unique to the military community, including transitions, frequent moves, separations, and deployments.

Work Environment

Duties are performed in multiple indoor (60%) and outdoor (40%) locations as directed by the Department of War (DoW). Indoor settings include military installations, schools, or child development centers (CDCs). Outdoor work may involve traversing uneven terrain (grass, gravel, dirt), stairs, and exposure to weather. In CDC settings, counselors may sit on the floor for up to 2 hours to interact with children. Environments vary by assignment.

Specialized Positions

Adult Counseling

Adult MFLCs provide counseling, consultation, and outreach to eligible Service Members and adult family members. Services are supplemental to the formal military behavioral and physical health system and focus on:

  • Relationships
  • Stress management
  • Parenting and parent-child communication
  • Child behavioral issues
  • Frequent relocations and deployments
  • Financial and budget concerns
  • Job stress

Adult counselors work on military installations, either in community service buildings or embedded with units, to enhance operational readiness and family resiliency.

Special Operations Command (SOCOM) Positions

MFLCs in SOCOM provide critical mental health support to Service Members and families in high-pressure, high-stakes environments. These roles require at least a Secret (T3) clearance due to the sensitive nature of special operations work. SOCOM personnel and families face unique challenges, including:

  • Frequent deployments and intense operational demands
  • Clandestine operations and counterterrorism efforts
  • Family stress due to frequent separations and mission secrecy

Counselors in SOCOM must be prepared for the distinct demands of supporting personnel and families in these environments.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in Behavioral Health (MS/MSW/MA/PhD).
  • Licensure to practice at the independent level (LCSW, MFT, LPCC, Psychologist) in a U.S. state or territory.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Ability to pass a basic background check and obtain a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI/CNACI) clearance (Public Trust).

Benefits

  • Unlimited and free continuing education units (CEUs) through a Leidos affiliate.
  • Reimbursement for job-related license renewal fees.
  • Eligibility to participate in a 401K retirement plan.
  • Access to health and wellness programs with cashback incentives.
  • Employee discount program and exclusive discount marketplace.
