Metallurgical Engineer
About the role
Lead continuous improvement in process metallurgy, driving excellence in manufacturing, evaluation, and performance of sheet products produced at Arconic’s Tennessee Operations. This role involves translating customer and industry standards into process designs, control plans, and production work instructions while ensuring accurate execution and ongoing process management.
Responsibilities
- Translate customer and industry standards into process design, Control Plans, FMEA, and production work instructions, ensuring accurate execution.
- Measure initial success and monitor ongoing results in process management to continually improve products and processes.
- Develop improvement plans using Metallurgy/Material Science expertise to ensure customer satisfaction and drive cost reduction.
- Troubleshoot, design, and execute experiments to develop processes and products.
- Determine impact and process control for equipment and operations affecting product quality.
- Provide input to improve uptime, equipment reliability, and adherence to regulatory and Arconic EHS requirements.
- Perform daily duties in a hands-on environment, including on-call response to implement reaction plans, restore flow, and develop root-cause solutions.
- Provide day-to-day technical advice, problem-solving, and support to operations and maintenance using quality systems, engineering principles, and reliability tools.
- Initiate and implement improvement projects to eliminate safety and quality concerns, reduce costs, and ensure customer satisfaction.
- Apply, audit, and ensure compliance with ISO 90001/IATF 16949 and ISO 17025 standards, procedures, and product/process control for second- and third-party audits.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Material Science, Metallurgy, or a related field from an accredited institution (required at time of hire).
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; verification of employment eligibility will be required at hire. Visa sponsorship is not available.
Qualifications
- Advanced Degree (preferred).
- 3+ years of experience as a Metallurgist in an aluminum manufacturing environment.
- Experience with rolling operations and heat-treatable alloys.
- Quality system experience (e.g., TS 16949) and Lean manufacturing experience.
- Metallurgical experience with automotive products.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts in a user-friendly manner.
- Effective problem-solving skills to identify root causes and drive continuous improvement.
- Knowledge of quality systems, statistical techniques, metrology, inspection, and test methods.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, statistical data analysis tools (e.g., Minitab, Spotfire).

The Tennessee Operations facility, located near the Great Smoky Mountains, is one of the most modern aluminum fabricating plants in the world. It produces high-quality molten metal and aluminum sheet and has been a leader in the industry for over 100 years.
