METAL WORK MECHANIC

New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) keeps the city healthy, safe, and clean by collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning streets and vacant lots, and clearing snow and ice. About the role

Under supervision, Metal Work Mechanics fabricate, assemble, and install structural metal components for the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment, buildings, public structures, and appurtenances. Responsibilities include:

• Laying out jobs from drawings, samples, or written descriptions
• Creating patterns and templates
• Cutting, drilling, forging, burning, welding, brazing, and using other metalwork processes to fabricate components
• Using hand and powered tools, welding, burning, and brazing equipment to assemble and attach fabricated components
• Performing preparation, finishing, and specialized or structural welding
• Rigging as required
• Directing the work of assigned personnel
• Maintaining records and making reports
• Operating motor vehicles

Working conditions

• Wearing face shields, ear plugs, work gloves, appropriate work shoes, and attire for protection
• Working in environments with excessive heat, noise, vehicle fumes, and smoke
• Lifting materials or equipment weighing approximately 40 pounds

Requirements

• Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as a journeyman/journeywoman metalwork mechanic, blacksmith, or welder in fabricating, installing, and metalworking plates, structural shapes, or other metal components; or
• At least three years of the above experience plus sufficient relevant training from an approved trade or vocational high school (six months of experience credited per year of schooling)

License Requirements

• A valid Welder's License issued by the New York City Department of Buildings, certified for Class I Shop and Field
• A Certificate of Fitness "Type G38" or "Type G95" (Torch Use of O-2 Combustion Gas) issued by the New York City Fire Department
• A Class C Commercial Driver License with a Hazardous Materials endorsement, valid in New York State, with no restrictions precluding Metal Work Mechanic duties

Preferred Skills

• Certification for Class I Shop and Field or SMAW with A & U and GMAW with A & U
• GTAW certification preferred
• Certificate of Fitness Type G60 issued by the New York City Fire Department

$106,631.00 – $117,379.00
